From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to BILL SWISHER on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 06:34:10
A friend of mine was budget director at the T
and discovered that the cost of labor to collect
fares exceeded the revenues! so looked into making
I guess those crafty Europeans have found a way around that problem.
    When I

    It's a cost/benefit thing. I talked to someone
living in a German city who was a regular
Schwarzfahrer and worked it out that he came out
somewhat ahead on average with the occasional E50
penalty; But then he was a white (relatively
unlikely to get stopped) American (relatively
shameless and could plead ignorance if he had to).

was there last fall, after you guys dumped me off in Toulouse...
I travelled exclusively by train. Of the 14 train legs I rode (and
    paid for),
I had my ticket looked at 5 times (35.7% of the time), income without
    labor to
    verify.

On the train train Lilli and I get checked
almost every time. On the S- or U-Bahn not
so much. The one notable time we didn't get
checked we were the only two passengers in
the first-class cabin of the TGV (this was
in France), and presently some interloper
came sneaking on. Eventually the train person
came into the compartment - but did not check
    anything!

    +

out what I'll do with the white meat, though.
Chop it up, add lots of mayo and spread it on brea...oh wait, never mind. Rottsa Ruck.

Two things to do with the white meat.

    1. Poach in butter to cover halfway. Flip. I
would have used butter to cover, but that
would have been a profligacy. That served two.

    2. Poach in a mixture of butter, sherry, and
stock until just pink inside. Remove the meat
to a warm oven, then make a sauce of the liquid
plus a bunch of cream. That served two with
    leftovers for one.

    3. Either make Chinese food or throw it out.
    Haven't decided which.

I've decided to go ahead with the Africa trip.

Good, I think. Did you talk with Lilli about
    South Africa?

    Kilimanjaro salad
    categories: African, starter, meat
    yield: 1 bowlful

1 hd lettuce, torn into small pieces
    2 lg tomatoes, sliced
    1 sm carrot, slivered
    1/2 cucumber, sliced
    2 sticks celery, finely sliced
1 bn spring onions, tails sliced & tops snipped
    Handful of biltong (dried meat)

Toss all ingredients together in a large salad
bowl, except for the celery, spring onions and
biltong, which can all be scattered over the
    top before serving.

Serve with a dressing if you like.

I didn't count the two times the train people wandered by not checking anything. Nor the time the security, I guess that's what they were with their fancy badges/guns/civilian clothes, people checking ID's and looking into random bags/examining even more random papers etcetera.

Nah, I forgot. Maybe this summer if you two drop by, or in France this fall. But by that point I'd already decided to go ahead. It'll be about 3 weeks total, 17 days for the tour, add 3 days for Cape Town and the Cape itself, toss
in a day or three flying.
As I told someone else "Feral trees, brush, and fleeting glimpses of fast moving four footed furry things though the aforementioned flora. Nothing I can't see in Alaska." Well that's not exactly true, I should get to see penguins.
