I know Aldi is in NYS. There is one in Brockport. I just looked and
there is one at 505 Third St in Ithaca. I'm not sure if that is the
    closest one to you.

To find an ALDI look near a Wally-World. Their business model has them located close-by a Walm*rt Stupor Centre.

Here in the Rochester area, that doesn't seem to be true.... pretty
much all the ALDIs I know about parked themselves near a Wegmans... or possibly a TOPS market... And the Wally's aren't all that close by....

It's certainly that way things are in downstate Illinois, Western Indiana, Northeastern Missouri and Southeastern Iowa. Mayhap they haven't moved
    yours yet.

A few years ago all three of
our local ALDI markets were uprooted and moved to be near a
Bentonville Behemoth. When they moved their thriving location in a "marginal" area (served by busses and within walking distance of
several senior and low income high rises) to the outskirts of the northeast side to be across the street from Wally Whirled there was
much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth ...... especially as the busses did not run out there.

Around here, the buses seem to service the Walmarts in most cases....

Our bus service does a fair job on centre city and attached 'burbs. And
the colleges/university. But the three Whack-A-Martz are far southwest
(the original not a Super-Centre), far southeast and far northeast. The
newer pair are both on the Meijer Super-Centre model. The original is
an anchor store of the big strip maul.

And when Wally's put a new Stupor Centre on the south side outskirts - guess what went in directly across the street? Besides the La Quinta
(with not a Denny's in sight) and the Pizza Ranch, that is. Bv)=

Guess it does seem to be a rule where you are, then....

    Yup.

WE just lost our last K-Mart. Damn! I was on the opening crew for that
store in 1965 .... managed the camera department.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

    Title: K-Mart Subs
Categories: Sandwiches, Breads, Cheese, Pork, Beef
    Yield: 4 Sandwiches

    4 Submarine rolls; White soft
    - split Sarah Lee
    8 sl Salami; w/peppercorns
    4 sl Oscar Mayer bologna
    4 sl Oscar Mayer honey-roasted
    - ham
    4 sl Kraft American cheese
    1/4 Onion; sliced sliver thin
    1/2 oz Lettuce; shredded
    2 Tomatoes; sliced 1/8" thick
1 oz Banana peppers; in rings
    1 Dill pickle; thin lengthwise
    - slices
    1 oz French's yellow mustard

About This Recipe: "I had an awful craving hit me for one of
these wonderful K-mart Subs and HAD to have one! I searched
high and low and finally found a woman on a message board
that used to work the deli counter in the late 80's at a
K-mart in Dayton, Ohio. This was one of the same stores that
my Mom would take me as a kid to get one of these wonderful
subs and a frozen Coke! I used to stand in front of the
counter and watch them make these subs and remembered all
but one of the ingredients. Make sure that you wrap your
subs and allow them to sit for 30 minutes before serving or
they are not the same. This allows the bread, meat and
veggies to show some love to one another."

Slice all of your veg; dill pickle, tomato, lettuce and
onion. Layout your meats in a stack and slice them half.
    Slice your cheese in half.

Open the rolls without breaking the hinge of the bread.
Squirt on the mustard in a V shape pattern across both the
    top and bottom bun.

TOP BUN: Place 4-6 pickle slivers on the top bun.

BOTTOM BUN: 4 salami halves. 2 bologna halves. 2 cheese
slices. 2 ham halves. 4 tomato slices. Shredded lettuce. 4-8
    pepper rings.

    Yup.

Coldwell Banker has a preferred property profile on them. They do
like to position themselves close to an existing large supermarket,
    but not necessarily a Walmart.

    Preferred location criteria:

22,000 square feet with a minimum of 95 dedicated parking spaces
2.5 acre pads for purchase and development
    minimum 103' of frontage
    Signalized, full access intersection preferred
Daily traffic count in excess of 20,000 vehicles per day
Dense trade area population within 3 miles
Sites located in community and regional shopping districts

Tacking onto the vehicle thread I recently saw my first 10 Passenger

juice. Stir mixture. Spread half of the mixture over the top of the
    tenderloin.

Roast for 30 minutes, then spread the remaining brown sugar mixture

The former locations met all of those qualifications - except possibly "dedicated parking spaces" as they were in busy strip mauls/shopping
centres. There was, however plenty of parking. And public transport
to the edge of (and sometimes within) the parking lot.

The new locations are stand-alone (two) and a long strip maul (one). I
am unsure if the two purpose-built stand alones were built by ALDI or
are done as a custom-build and lease arrangement by a "developer".

Tacking onto the vehicle thread I recently saw my first 10 Passenger Mercedes Sprinter Bus/Van Limo. Very luxurious! One of the Chinese

I've not seen the "luxury" versions. But a couple of the handicap haulers
use Sprinters w/ramps & lifts as a part of their fleet. And, of course, Chizzler kept the tooling after the breakup with Daimler and subsequent marriage to Fiat - so, in many cases, unless one can see if it has a
Tri-Star logo or a Ram's Head logo it's had to differentiate.

I don't buy fresh meats or produce (except Clementines) at ALDI. But,
they typically have killer pricing on eggs and milk. And their packaged meat/deli items - like smoked sausages, lunch meat - are real bargains.

I think being the lazy things the two of us are, going to more than one food store is 'out' when we shop together. I guess we save $$ on gas
that way? :) At the very least, it's less traction on my legs walking from one end of any store to the other :)

    Since I was more-or-less forced into getting a smart-a$$ phone I figure
I might as well take advantage of the apps that all my grocery stores
have available. So, before I make a "stock-up" trip I parse the adverts
in the newspaper, the emailed "weekly flyer(s)", the coupons offered on
the apps, etc. And plan my route.

The coupons saved to the app is a boon to both the shopper and to the
check-out lane. No fumbling with and entering paper coupons (I'm sure
we've all been behind someone with a bushel of un-organised coupons in
a loooooong check-out lane). Just scan the app and let the store's
confusers work their magick. I find that I use coupons more often now
that the convenience factor has been improved.

ALDI is a regular stop on my grocery expeditions. I'm not a "buy it
all in one stop" sort of shopper.

We are, some because of necessity and some because we go once.....
almost every darn day - at least Ron does. He's got quite the
    schedule sadly enough.

I plan to take from a couple hours to half-a-day. And I still have to
do occasional quick in & out shots for something I need and neglected
to stock - or whatever. Bv)=

    Categories: Five, Potatoes, Vegetables, Herbs
    Yield: 4 Servings

    1 1/2 lb Sweet potatoes
    2 tb Crushed rosemary
    Salt & Cayenne

Fast and easy to make. Be sure to cut the sweet potatoes
into long steak fries (1/2" batons). * This gets them
cooked quickly. If you are frying a turkey add these to
the heated oil once the turkey is out of the way and you
will get more flavor into these fries.

Wash sweet potatoes and cut into long thin strips, about
1/2" thick. * Place in ice water for about 15 minutes.

Remove sweet potato fries from water and pat dry with
paper towels. Place in hot oil about 375F/190C.

Fry for about 5 minute or until they look done. **

Remove from oil and allow to drain. Sprinkle crushed
rosemary and salt over top. Great served with a spicy
    tomato ketchup.

VARIATION: Add a small turnip and a parsnip to the sweet
potato for a multi-coloured and tasty presentation.

    * NOTE: I use a "French-fry" cutter that has 1/4" and
3/8" dies. I find that the result fries up quicker and
the centres are less mushy. -- UDD

    1 Pepper squash, or other

    1/4 c Oil
    2 Garlic clove; minced

    1/4 ts Red pepper flakes
    2 1/2 c Chicken or vegetable stock
    1 sm Cauliflower
    1/2 lb Green beans
    1/2 c Peanuts

Pick over lentils for small stones or impurities. Wash them in a

In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat and saute onions and
garlic about 3 minutes or until softened. Stir in cumin, coriander,
turmeric, pepper and chilies. Cook, stirring, 30 seconds. Stir in
lentils to coat well with oil. Stir in lemon juice and stock. Bring
to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, peel squash and cut into 1 inch pieces. You should have
about 4 cups. Cut cauliflower into small florets, about 6 cups worth.
Cut red pepper into thin strips. Trim beans and cut in two. Stir
squash and cauliflower into lentil mixture. Bring to a boil again,
reduce heat. Cover and simmer another 5 minutes. Stir in red pepper
and beans and simmer 5 minutes longer. Stir in salt and peanuts.

Cook, uncovered, about another 5 minutes, or until all vegetables are
tender and lentils have formed a thick sauce. Adjust seasonings to
taste. Serve over hot rice. The curry will thicken if made ahead and
reheated. Add more stock or water if necessary.

him why he kept his Samuel's Clothing in an area with four other
clothiers cheek-by-jowl. He replied, you don't come here (the area) looking for furniture. People who come here are looking for something
    to wear.

    Here I am.

Possibly.... :) Whether close to other supermarkets or a Walmart with
a supercenter, it would appear that they want to be where people are shopping for food and such... to catch those that will go to more than
one store, especially if it's convenient... :)

Beats the tar out of me. The original Wally Whirled for Springfield is
the north anchor in a looooong strip maul -- and is not a "Super Centre".

Yet there is an ALDI three store-fronts south of it - relocated from
being an anchor in another, slightly smaller strip maul. A manager at
one of the ALDI stores which got uprooted and moved to be near the
Bentonville Behemoth told me it was corporate edict that moved them.

When asked if their "numbers" had improved she shrugged her shoulders
and opined "They're about the same as the other location".

I am one of those who shop more than one store - not as a matter of
convenience but as a matter of thrift. And I never, ever, shop at any
part of WalMart (including S(c)am's Club) not as a matter of thrift but
    as a matter of principle.

    Title: Alfredo Shrimp Casserole
Categories: Pasta, Seafood, Herbs, Dairy, Cheese
    Yield: 12 Servings

    16 oz Elbow macaroni
12 oz Medium cooked shrimp; tail
    - off
30 oz (2 jars) Priano Creamy
    - Alfredo Sauce
    1 tb Parsley flakes
1 1/2 ts Ground black pepper
    1 c Whole milk
    2 lg Eggs; lightly beaten
    3/4 c Reggano grated Parmesan
    - Cheese; divided
7 1/2 oz Savoritz Buttery Round
    - Crackers; crushed
    1 c Butter; melted

    Set oven @ 350°F/175°C.

In a large saucepan, bring 2 quarts water to a boil. Add
macaroni and boil for 6 minutes; drain. Macaroni will
only be cooked half way. While the macaroni cooks,
defrost shrimp in a colander under cold water for about
5 minutes; shrimp will still be slightly frozen. Place
    macaroni and shrimp in a 9" x 13" pan.

In a medium bowl, combine Alfredo sauce, parsley and
pepper. In a separate bowl, whisk milk into beaten eggs.
Slowly whisk milk mixture into Alfredo mixture. Stir in
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. Pour over macaroni, stir until
    coated.

Spread crushed crackers evenly over the casserole.
Sprinkle with the remaining Parmesan cheese. Pour butter
    evenly over the crackers.

Bake for 1 hour, 30 minutes or until top is golden brown
    and the center is set.

It's certainly that way things are in downstate Illinois, Western
Indiana, Northeastern Missouri and Southeastern Iowa. Mayhap they
    haven't moved yours yet.

It doesn't look like they are planning to move the ALDIs stores... new
ones have also gone in near an existing Wegmans.... maybe they are
aiming for a higher clientele in our area.... :)

Or they are working under the premise my friend Lyman used. I asked

There is one ALDI store in my County and another in the next County.

As I've been reading this Topic I've thought ALDI placed their stores near InterState Expressways, since the one I shop at is near the Loop that joins
the two Expressways that go through my area (South Central Indiana).
I-64 passes through my County and I-65 passes through the next County.
The store in the other County is near that Loop also.

When I've traveled, I've seen them located near X-Ways Exits in lots of
    the places I've been through.

EXCEPT Huntington, West Virginia - Their store is near the end of a long
road that runs from the X-Way Exit into the Eastern part of town.

I will write a message in the Memories echo to Joe Mackey about ALDI after
    I finish this message.

In my area, there are many ALDI stores across the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky.

But only two in my area on this side of the River.
Neither of those are close to my home, but we go to ALDI regularly.

The one I shop at IS close to a WalMart store, the one in the other County
has a Meijer store near it.

I never made the connection of ALDI being close to the WalMart stores.
I'll try paying more attention the next time I go on a road trip.

Was it corporate edict that it had to be WM? or just to be closer to a
    larger store....?

When asked if their "numbers" had improved she shrugged her shoulders

I'm not surprised.... Theories don't always play out as expected...

I am one of those who shop more than one store - not as a matter of convenience but as a matter of thrift.

At one time, I did also... when the thrift wasn't as pronounced,
convenience took over... I might shop other stores for a particular
item unavailable at my usual, though... And do get some bargains by
shopping BJs to get some things instead of at Wegmans...

And I never, ever, shop at any
part of WalMart (including S(c)am's Club) not as a matter of thrift
but as a matter of principle.

I've reached that point myself... also because I don't like the large store-ness of it... :)

Not quite as populous as around here... ;)

As I've been reading this Topic I've thought ALDI placed their stores

Never thought of it that way.... we do have expressways all around the
area, though... and come to think of it, the ALDIs that I'm aware of in
this area are all within a mile of an exit from one of those.... except
for one nearer the center of town, on a major north-south street, which
also has a TOPS (grocery) store near it...

I will write a message in the Memories echo to Joe Mackey about ALDI
    after I finish this message.

Yes, I saw that there... ;)

In my area, there are many ALDI stores across the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky.

Maybe your two are scatter from the Louisville locations....? ;)

Neither of those are close to my home, but we go to ALDI regularly.

We shopped ALDI for someone else a few times, and didn't see anything
that seemed a particularly better choice to buy than what we get at
Wegmans, so haven't been going there frequently, or even infrequently,
    for ourselves... :)

The one I shop at IS close to a WalMart store, the one in the other
County has a Meijer store near it.
I never made the connection of ALDI being close to the WalMart stores. I'll try paying more attention the next time I go on a road trip.

Jim Weller posted something not that long ago from, I think, ALDI's
website that listed the criteria they use to determine where to place
their stores.... It does suggest that being near SOME big grocery store
is part of their strategy.... but it didn't specifically name WM... And
as I've said to Dave, it doesn't seem at all to be the case in our area
    that WM is the "magnet".....
