From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Monday, November 26, 2018 09:15:58
I've noted that the good home health aides are more likely to know how
to get the best use from the drawsheets than most hospital staff... they almost always require the assist of two, while at home, one person can
do it just fine (including myself, actually)....
It's your focus and the resources you have to work
with. Certainly at the hospital, an aide is more
likely to have learned such skills than the RNs.
Possibly... I've been surprised more than once at how handy some RNs
are.... but then, most of those started out as a patient tech....

Depends - now with RN training being more academically
focused, the graduates seem to be more sort of halfway
    doctors than nursing nurses.

They probably would.... sometimes they surprise us by what they like and then by what they turn their noses up at... ;)
Hard to tell, and attitudes do change in both directions.
Cats are just hard to judge... :) Ours like breaded shrimp tails, but
not unbreaded.... no problem, we just won't share the latter with them anymore... ;)

Is the crispiness a criterion? One can make
    unbreaded shrimp tails shatteringly crisp
(that's the way I like them, too).

You're painting the picture of someone who
looks too intensely and too often.
When it's a fairly close friend, one does get put into a situation of
seeing a lot... And I can generally tell pretty quickly and without much effort when someone really is slimy... She doesn't get herself into that
sort of situation any more though... she finally decided it wasn't worth
    the effort, hassle or pain....

Still, it might be worthwhile to dissect why
she kept looking for love in all the wrong
    places.

previous boom period. Some of Weggie's
success is that it has not been blindly
optimistic about the economics of a place.
Could well be.... and agreed on their willingness to be realistic about the economics...
The chain's good reputation seems to rest on
    the family's business astuteness.
And on their commitment to good customer service... but I suppose that
could be a part of the business astuteness, too... :)

Good customer service is predicated on having the
resources to offer it. Shoestringy operations are
less likely to be able to do so.

I don't understand any of that but glad that
the pension wasn't gutted the way a lot of
    them are these days.
When offered the chance to convert his original annuity-style pension to
the more modern 401K or similar, he didn't bite... decided to stay with
the original... that one doesn't grow very fast at the beginning, but
then has a steep upcurve in value as one approaches retirement... Since
they laid him off close to retirement age, it hadn't reached the peak,
but had started the climb... I think it ended up at 80% of the 50% of
salary it should have attained.... Still better than nothing...

Quite a bit better than nothing. One does think
about the cynicism of the HR people.

Hopefully not in my lifetime.... although I've nothing really against
    some insect supplementation... ;)
Just think of them as a bunch of nutrients.
Minimizing hunger worldwide is going to require
use of all resources, not just the traditional
ones or the ones that look beautiful.
    Yeah, I know... ;)

Nobody says it has to be served in its ugly form,
either. The Japanese take all sorts of sea detritus
and turn it into surimi. I suggested once that
philine, the slimy mephitic creatures that Amanda
Newsom was studying, be made into something similar,
    and why not insects?

    Crunchy sweet Brussels sprout salad
    Ramona Home Journal 11/15/18
Wegmans has something similar, but cold, on their hot/cold bar... I
don't think they added the nuts, but there are cranberries in it... I
get it every so often.... :)

Without the nuts, it'll still be crunchy
enough, but it should taste better with.
Probably some sensitivity to food sensitivity.

... Haggis is a peppery pate that if it was French would be a delicacy.

It's way starchier than a pate. I admit that
it's not bad at all, but delicacy is a stretch.

    &

Some of my best friends are LDSes, though none toes
the line precisely - if people don't like me do beer
and wine in their presence, I tend to distance myself
from them. I feel the same way about those who look
down their noses at my eating pork or beef, too.
No point in inflicting yourself on their sensitivities...

If the sensitivities are in my face, I'm not
going to stand for it; if they're quiet and
    well-behaved, so I will be.

Not mine. On the other hand, Lilli just made two trays
of peanut butter toffee (she was actually intending to
make peanut brittle but didn't use a candy thermometer)
Those do sound tasty... ;) I like the Mary Janes, but haven't had one
in a while... Lilli's do sound much better, too... :) Even if it was
    an unintended result... ;)

They were essentially caramels with peanuts.

Brown sugar and marmalade glazed smoked pork shoulder
    categories: holiday, pork, roast, main
    servings: 8 to 10

1 smoked pork shoulder (picnic ham, 5 to 7 lb)
1 md carrot (cut into chunks)
1 lg onion (cut into chunks)
1 celery rib (cut into chunks)
    1 bay leaf
h - For the marmalade glaze
1/4 c light brown sugar (packed)
    1/4 c orange marmalade
    1 ts dry mustard

Place the smoked shoulder in a large Dutch oven or
stockpot, fat side up; cover with cold water. Place
the pot over high heat, and bring to a boil; add
carrot, onion, celery, and bay leaf. Reduce the heat
to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 2 1/2 to 3 hr.

Place a rack in a shallow, foil-lined roasting pan.
Heat the oven to 350F (180C).

Remove the meat from broth. With a sharp knife,
remove the rind. Set the meat, fat side up, on the
rack in the prepared roasting pan. Score fat in a
    decorative diamond-like pattern.

Combine the brown sugar, marmalade, and dry mustard
in a bowl and blend well. Spread the glaze over the
    scored surface.

Bake at 350F for 20 to 30 min.
