A lot of similar Alaska outposts don't have runways, just dirt

Or if you're in the civilized part of the state...roads.

And then there's float planes. They don't bother me a bit in the
summertime but landing on snow covered ice on a lake made me a tad
nervous. If the snow covers up a pressure ridge the skis could
catch on it and tip the plane, prop down and tail up. Which might
make it hard to get home.

    Title: Lime Float Refresher
    Categories: Beverages, Ice cream, Fruit
    Yield: 6 Servings

    1 1/2 c Pineapple juice
    1 c Lime juice
    2/3 c Sugar
    Green food coloring
    1 pt Lime sherbert
    2 c Ginger ale
    Fresh mint, for garnish

Combine first 4 ingredients, adding the food coloring a little at
a time, in order to not overdo. Chill well.

Fill 6 glasses half-full of lime mixture; add a scoop of lime
sherbert to each. Fill glasses with ginger ale. Garnish with mint.

... So now chocolate is good for you and Romaine lettuce can kill you?

Loved floats! My favorite plane was a Super Cub on floats. Skis were...OK. Something about all the mechanical stresses on the airframe, did I ever mention
my father was an airplane mechanic? I don't like to see things beatup that way.

Me too. I associate them mentally with the typical destination:
pristine wilderness lakes full of giant lake trout that aren't vary
bright as they've never seen an artificial lure before.

Not that I recall. Wasn't he Navy too?

I was about to post a trout recipe and then I remembered you are
    strictly catch and release.

A different lure to catch a different fish:

    Title: Penne Alla Malefemmina
Categories: Pasta, Vegetables, Tnt, Italian, Marinades
    Yield: 4 servings

1/4 c Olive oil; extra virgin
    20 Kalamata olives; pitted and
    -halved
1 tb Capers plus 1/2 ts. marinade
    5 Garlic cloves, chopped
    1 c Tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1/4 c Basil leaves, some whole,
    -some chopped in half
    Salt to taste
    1 pn Red pepper flakes
3/4 lb Macaroni pasta like penne

Pasta with Marinated Tomatoes, Capers, Olives, Garlic, Chilies,
    and Herbs.

Author's note: "This pasta dish would not be the same without the
piquancy it picks up from the capers, and from its Italian name.
The dish loosely translates as 'bad woman pasta,' as several other
lusty tomato and garlic and herb pasta dishes do. Legend has it
that these dishes are so named because they are very aromatic and
lure customers in when other charms fail. Another explanation is
that the dishes are so quick they can be prepared between
    customers."

Combine olive oil with olives, capers, garlic, tomatoes, basil, salt,
and pepper flakes. Let sit and marinate for half hour if possible.
Cook penne in rapidly boiling salted water until al dente. Drain and
toss with sauce. Serve immediately, or let cool and enjoy as a salad.

We took a 185, flight instructor in the righthand seat and our wives were in the back seat, on floats over to a little lake across the inlet to fish for salmon where the creek ran into it. We had a nice picnic while we were there, paid by engine hour for the plane. If you look at a chart...there's lots of water around here. I didn't catch any, hooked a couple. Saw a couple of wolves running along side a river we were flying up/down. I miss it.

Not that I recall. Wasn't he Navy too?

Air Force, BIG planes...transports is what he did. I did have a couple of uncles who were in the Navy. Neither made a career of it. Although my dads brother had an extended tour thanks to that kerfuffle that ended up with him doing a march out of Bataan.

That was a particularly nasty episode in history.
