I think Dale could verify that this is accurate information. Total security is to destroy the media, even after wiping. Wiping may be adequate for most media though.

Looked pretty good. My problem is that the media on which I have some sensitive information cannot be read by any device I now have -- hence
the need to use the magnetic eraser that Dave Drum got for me. Once
that is done, I am comfortable with putting the resultant disks into the
trash. To the best of my knowledge, none of it is classified but some
of it is definitely proprietary commercial stuff. Due diligence says
that I need to do what I can to make sure it does not fall into the
wrong hands -- even though I know that is unlikely.

Definitely understandable. That is of much more value than any seminary
    papers I have written.

As it is, I have a solid state drive that suddenly became
non-responsive. It isn't even recognized by the computer. Since I can't
wipe it, the only way to deal with it is with a sledgehammer. My
computer is back in action with a new solid state drive and with a new
install of Fedora 29 which was just released. My documents and pictures
reside on a separate hard disk, so they were not affected.
