Breakfast at the Sheraton was your standard
buffet, perfectly respectable, with two dishes
that stood out - a so-called egg tortilla that
was more sweet custard than breakfast food,
rather like a tamal de elote only good-tasting;
also really nice ripe fresh-cut fresh fruit.
Lilli fell asleep while driving, having suffered
an unexpected and delayed toll on her body from
the redeye and Word Connect. I was awake and guided
the car out of its ditchward path while waking her
gently. We didn't die.
We went south sort of randomly, as the car we'd
rented had no GPS and her phone was on the fritz.
Chefs on the Run is a caterer that has opened a
small storefront in downtown Homestead, a somewhat
over-the-hill town that is fighting to get back.
It took a bit to find, as the street it gives is
different from that on the signs - around here,
the tourist-friendly custom is to give each street
two or more names and then tell you only one.
It's a pleasant but cluttered place of odd shape
but friendly. When we came in we were greeted by
the cook, who leaned through the passthrough and
said that the waitress would be with us shortly,
as she was busy, which was the case; she led us to
the back corner table, which was perfectly fine.
The first thing I did was ask for strong black
coffee, for Lilli of course. For some reason they
don't serve coffee here. Okay, Diet Coke, then,
which was cheerfully provided And a Cigar City
lager for me to cure my raging thirst and calm
my nerves - this was a pleasant mild beverage,
not notable in any way except that it had been
made instate.
Lilli nad the All-American burger, which was
pretty much what you'd expect, except that
ordered rare it came rare.
I had two appetizers. alcapurrias, starch fritters
filled with semi-spicy ground beef, the somewhat
salty meat contrastingly nicely with the somewhat
sweet dough. The serving was enough to have filled
me, and I regretted getting the beef skewers, which
were not of the freshest nor the tenderest meat,
marinated in vinegar, onions, and cilantro I think,
and not drained before cooking on a flattop, so the
meat was more stewed than browned. Chimichurri was
dull, and I should have but did not ask for hot sauce.
The special dessert was almond cardamom flan; though
neither of us was hungry, it sounded intriguing, so
we got one to split. It came rather hard but starchy,
and the almond flavor came from extract.
The best thing about the meal was the smile of the
waitress, followed closely by the burger. My food
was nothing to write home about.
After which we went a bit down the road to find
the not unpleasant and - more importantly -
inexpensive Home2 Suites, Florida City, where we
were greeted warmly and given some snacks to
reward us for our loyalty. I prevailed on Lilli
to get some rest, and we went to the pleasantish
room (okay for a night or two, anyway). She conked
out quickly, coming to well after dark.
