These were good peaches--Dale took us to a no longer in business
store. If you've not bought any by the time we get up there
Thursday, I'll get them--but may have to spend some time trying
to find just the right ones. (G)
Probably no more than I would, and probably less time,
actually... I did sorta pass it over to Lydia, but I don't know
if she's bought any yet....
She got some really good ones.
She does a lot of baking and preserving, so I'm not surprised she
knew how to pick them... in fact, they finished ripening at her
house faster than she'd expected, so it's a good thing they didn't
slip over to rotten... ;)
They were at just the right stage.
The ones we got in PA last year had gone just past that stage by
the time we got home, but not enough to get rotten. Made them a bit
harder to work with as they were so juicy. (G)
I could have made a cobbler also but we
had so many goodies anyway, I figured better not this year.
Maybe another year... :)
Possible, we'll see.

local peaches. SC ones start showing up earlier in the summer at the farmer's market.

like beef-a-roni for LG next week since temps will be in the 50s.
Probably a good idea... :) Sunday, our church dinner will be a
planned Thanksgiving dinner... Our temps are to be, I think, in the
high 30s, maybe low 40s....
I'm doing beef stew for supper tonight.
That sounds tasty... :)
It was very good--used potatoes and turnips from the farmer's
market; onion, mushrooms, carrots, celery and a little bit of
tomato besides the beef. Just salt and pepper for seasoning--
nothing else really needed.
Fresh tomato...? Sounds good... :)
Some tomato I had on hand that needed using--too mushy for cutting
into salad or whatever but good for cooking.
Good use for it... :)

week I had the follow up on the knee so couldn't go but hope
to go next week.
That's a good thing... :) And getting to your quilting club
also helps with feeling settled in.... :)
Yes, tho I need to work on finishing a quilt started a while
ago (before breaking my arm) or start another project. Not sure
which way I'll go right now.
That IS an older project.... did you have a specific plan for
where it was going....? Is it a fairly big project....? Might
be nice to get it finished off.... :)
It's a QofV quilt for a female vet--we're well stocked on quilts
currently so there has been no rush to finish it. That's why I've
taken the time to work on other projects.
Spent part of Tuesday running around trying to find a winter ski
jacket (parka) for me, finally found one at Sear's, Lands'End.
Good that you found one.... hope the running around didn't tire
you too badly....
It wasn't too bad, just frustrating that the one I wanted
initially wasn't available (missing the liner) and finding
another one that fit my criteria wasn't easy. Tried places like
Ross, Old Navy, etc before going to Sear's, should have gone
there right after Burlington and saved a lot of run around.
It's always in the last place you look.... (G)
Sam's Club, yesterday, had a rack of the same type of jacket but not
the color I'd wanted. Since I'd already bought the LE one, we passed. I also pointed out to Steve that the LE one is longer, will keep more of
me warm.
Today was Senior Center Veteran's Day program with a dinner--did
8 quilt presentations, including to a vet celebrating his 100th
birthday today.
Wow... that's exciting... :)
So neat to see the vets--and their reactions to the quilts.
Indeed... :)
Especially the WWII/Korea era vets I think.
We're getting the rain tomorrow, had our grass mowed today for
hopefully the last time this year.
Dunno if Richard's done the last mowing yet... but the grass
doesn't seem to be growing much any more anyway...

or wall hanging size.

As it turned out, both the tomato sauces were not usable... They'd sat
too long and had started growing stuff... so both were tossed... But I
had plenty of veggies to use as it was.... I had some baby potatoes,
baby carrots, celery, onion, garlic and a few fresh brussels
sprouts... added the beef and gravy.... about a third of it was left over... I may well augment that with a can of tomatoes... especially
if I can manage
to use that before it goes bad... ;)

I'll be taking time off from that in January tho.
While you recover from your surgery and focus on the therapy...
Yes, but will be doing some therapy before surgery as well.
That too... Could you do research on the vets while you are
mostly stuck at home....?
I don't have the information; the co-ordinator might be able to help
with that tho.
Yes, he is having fun in the kitchen. He made baslama bread
yesterday.
Nice... He does enjoy his baking... :)
Very much so, and we like what comes out of the oven. (G)
Hopefully I'll be feeling well enough by Thursday to make
some of our regular whole wheat bread.
And were you...? :)
No, and couldn't because the kitchen was such a mess from the flooring job. Maybe next week but I bought a loaf of bread, just in case.
I have some leftover tomato sauces I plan to toss into a beef
stew sometime this coming week... along with veggies that need
using... :)
That will be good; I do it on a regular basis (both the tomato
sauce and veggies that need using up).
As it turned out, both the tomato sauces were not usable...
They'd sat too long and had started growing stuff... so both
were tossed...
Sigh!
But I had plenty of veggies to use as it was.... I had some baby
potatoes, baby carrots, celery, onion, garlic and a few fresh
brussels sprouts... added the beef and gravy.... about a third
of it was left over... I may well augment that with a can of
tomatoes... especially if I can manage to use that before it
goes bad... ;)
Sounds good, either way.
We're supposed to have a storm this week end of the type we usually
get in January or February. Snow, sleet, etc--hopefully the power will stay on.
Did you at least keep your power on...?

Yes, we did--a few "blips" now and again but no outages. Other parts
of the state did lose power; it was a heavy, wet snow, the type that brings down trees, power lines, etc. Now we're watching for black ice
for a few more days as night temps are still below freezing.

But now I need to re-do some areas--did some shopping today so
have to fit the new stuff in nooks and crannies.
Didn't leave enough room for future stuff, eh...?
Don't have too much excess room but did manage to fit everything
in. Working on using up bits and pieces of odds and ends--that
will give us a bit more room.

Yes, a bit here, a bit there and all sorts of odds & ends get used up.
Managed it all yet, or are there just mores odds and ends being
generated to take up the slack...? (G)

Tonight's supper will be soup made from a bag of split peas I got
on sale at Publix (from the pantry), a chicken carcasse (for the
stock, some scraps of meat), left over red onion, tomato bits,
carrots, and whatever else I find in the fridge that needs cleaning

Trying to take it easy on how much I'm out at any time.
Good thinking.... conserve the energy needed for healing, and not get yourself overtired....
Did make it to prayer meeting and choir practice last night. Choir director from time to time would say something like "all stand
unless your name is R-u-t-h" or similar. Looks like maybe about 15
people for the Easter choir this year.
Cute.... and that's not too bad.... :)

Jacksonville got a couple of inches.
A little too close for comfort, I'd guess.... :) We're having
a couple of warmish days, and then back to the 30s and chance
of snow for the weekend... but then, it is still winter under
most classifications... ;)
We see the storm systems on the weather maps and think "......Rachel
is getting clobbered by this one" or "siblings in NY are getting snow", then "glad it's not us" a lot of the time. (G)
Can't say as I blame you... :)
He made bean soup the other day, used a meaty ham bone a friend
gave us plus navy beans, carrots, onion and celery. He only
pureed a small amount, leaving the soup quite chunky.
That sounds quite nice.... :)
T'was, and some is in the freezer for later.
Even better.... :)
Yes, we're now digging into the freezer for some of the things I'd put there in anticipation of the surgery. The soup will be there for a
meal also.
Sounds like you are still well supplied... :)

Or have Steve reach it for you, especially now... ;)
I think he may need a (shorter) step stool for the topmost
shelf, especially to safely get things that are towards the
back.
I can see that last... :)
And you'll see it in person in a few more months.
Yup.... :)
Michael has a previous committment that week end so I'm going to see
if another time might work. I know the first week end in October is
when you generally have a board meeting at the pond but do you have any other dates that may be out?

Apparantly not. One of the tornadoes that hit a couple of counties
over was an EF 2, others were EF 0 & 1, plus a lot of straight line

We're planning a June trip down there, between appointments.
It'll be to pick up some things they have for us, help them
move some things over to the apartment if needed or take other
stuff back to the house if needed.
What's going to happen with their house...?
Eventually sold, after Mom and Dad get all they want to keep from it
and the children take what they want.
Yes, don't know his schedule but do know he does present at
several conferences during the school year.
So might be away... :)
We'll see in September.
Yup. :)
Meanwhile, his parents were in town for the past week--his mom
both sang in the Easter choir and played piano for one number.
That was helpful... :) Had they planned it that way...?
Talking with her, she said that they did. Three years ago when the
Gettys did a concert at the seminary with a community mass choir that
he directed, his mom sang in that also. Each church was allotted 3 men,
3 women in the choir; IIRC, she was our 3rd woman. (G)
Yes, they're needed to get the early produce ready for sale or plants started to be transplanted later. It's now strawberry time--saw a
stand yesterday while we were out but we had some in the fridge so
didn't pick any more up.
The CLementines last week (or maybe the week before) didn't have a
foreign country of origin noted, so probably were from someplace
in the US... maybe Florida or California.... But it's the end of
the season for them... that might be the last box I get for now...
Until next winter. We usually get some but didn't this winter.
This year has been wet, but not as cold.
And hopefully no freezes in the offing this year, either.... :)
Apparantly not. One of the tornadoes that hit a couple of
counties over was an EF 2, others were EF 0 & 1, plus a lot of
straight line wind damage. The big one hit a dairy farm, killed
one cow & did other damage but could have done a lot more.
That's bad enough... but, yes, coulda been worse... I wonder if

Don't know; I understand it was injured in the storm but don't know if
it died from the injuries or had to be put down because of them. We
had to go over to the area yesterday, stopped at the dairy store for
ice cream. (It was good.) The store had several newspaper & magazine clippings about how the place got started, only about 15 years ago.

So still a flexible timeline... but a definite plan...

Not surprising. They usually show up here around the end of
May/beginning of June. Peaches from SC will come in next, then the NC peaches will hit the markets. All good eating in various forms--we've grilled peache halves. That's good for the not quite ripe ones as the
heat ripens them the last bit, makes them sweet but not overly so.

It could be a Raleigh post office, and be somewhat rural, just

We got some SC peaches at a roadside stand on our way north on Saturday. Small, clingstone, but very juicy. Good for eating as is; I don't want
to mess with cutting them up for pies or whatever.

with the forecast for mostly more of the same... not really
enough rain, though...
We've been in the mid to upperr 80s the last week or so, some
days with rain, others, not. Had to wait inside the Convention
Center in Raleigh today for a storm to get (partly) gone so we
could make a mad (wet) dash to the parking garage. Made it,
without getting too wet.
That wasn't too bad... :)
Wet enough--once we got going, didn't want to stop until we got under shelter again. Umbrellas were, of course, in the truck. Go figure.
peach loaves on sale... was tempted, but this week we're
hardly eating home at all, so it would just have gone bad on
me... maybe this week I'll grab one... :)
Sounds good to me. We're a couple of months from the Raleigh
Wegman's opening up.
That you are... I did grab a loaf last week, as there weren't
quite so many on display, and it looked like that might be the
end of them... the date was far enough out that it has lasted
the week... just one slice left now, and that'll probably be
eaten tomorrow... ;)
Sounds good--is it a quick bread sort of thing or not? Might be
worth trying to replicate.
Basically... not as dense as a pound cake, but more cake-y than
bread... At one time they made it with good chunks of peaches, now
there's much smaller bits, but still a good taste of peaches... :)
They did have it again this week, but I passed this time... :)
Might be worth trying--find some sort of fruit bread recipe and sub in peaches, tweak from there.
The other day I made a blueberry skillet pound cake, similar to
the strawberry one I made at Shipp's in 2017. This one is just as
good as the strawberry version, may try it with peaches next.
That would probably be good too... :)
That's my thinking.

Well, I just talked to Burt on the phone today, and they won't be able
to come this year... What he's been suspecting might have been a
hernia, turned out to indeed be one, and so now he's in the process of getting
all the clearances from other doctors to have hernia surgery...
nothing scheduled yet, of course... but he doesn't want to be a
distance away
from home while that is pending, understandably... Other than that, he
and Shirley are doing ok, just getting around a little slower than
they used to.... and enjoyed Michael's (and Bonnie's) visit with them recently...

No, it turned nasty on me and I've not felt like doing much of

Got to go back and see if there's any in the freezer or see if
we can special request some for next month.
Yup...:)
Looks like I'll special request it in early to mid September.
Sounds good... :)
Hopefully the ice cream will be, as well.
Especially now that you've built up the expectations... (G)
Have to check on Tuesday; he had it on the line last Wednesday but
don't know how well it sold. If there's some in the small freezer,
we'll get it to ensure you have a taste of it.
Sounds good... :)
But I didn't, and forgot to ask Steve to check if he went (he did)
after church on Wed.
OK, let me know if they are coming so we can find a place to put
them up at. It would be nice to see them but I'm not going to
hold my breath.
It's admittedly a long shot... ;) I don't think the burden of
finding a place for them to stay would fall on you... but of
course you'd still need to know that they were coming for other
reasons... ;)
Yes, as in # of extra chairs to borrow from the church and other
things of that sort.
Well, I just talked to Burt on the phone today, and they won't be
able to come this year... What he's been suspecting might have
been a hernia, turned out to indeed be one, and so now he's in
the process of getting all the clearances from other doctors to
have hernia surgery...
Ouch! Hopefully the clearances will come thru quickly.
nothing scheduled yet, of course... but he doesn't want to be a

yesterday to see if they had any more... But since that first

But at least they're still putting them out.
So far, anyway... :)
Enjoy them while they're available. Have you tried freezing them to
enjoy later?
Haven't tried freezing them... dunno how well it would work... Last
week, before going up to the Pond, I didn't see any at all at the
store (all I saw were apple struedel loaves), but this week there were some
again, along with some other similar breads... not so prominently
placed, though... :)
And last week was just busy enough that I didn't get a chance
to look so will try to this week. Maybe check some of my
southern cook books.
That could be a possibility... :)
Quite likely, actually.

We fell hard into fall overnight. Yesterday we were in the mid 90s;
today I don't even think we'll get to 70. Hit 100 on Thursday,
breaking a number of records but we probably won't see 90 again until spring.
And, as you know, I did find a peach loaf in the Columbia

We had some for lunch today--a very subtle peach flavor.
We sliced the whole loaf, kept some in the fridge and wrapped the

May try toasting it lightly to bring out the peach flavor even
more.
It looks like a basic quick bread so I may try using some of my

As always, there was a roasted peach and a root beer float flavors out this week. I tried a taster of the peach (should have gotten it in
combo with my usual, but didn't) from Steve's cone--he combined it with mango. Also tried a taster of the root beer but wasn't that impressed

Quite true....
We've had yo-yo weather--in the low 80s yesterday & today but to be in
the mid 60s by the latter part of the week. Finally getting some rain
but Steve has been able to grill some fast cooking meats (chicken,
beef) between showers the last few days.
You still have the overhead coverings on the porch set up...?
I came home from the Pond the next to last trip to find that
Richard had started using the furnace for this season... we
usually put that off as long as we can... :)
You must have had quite the cold snap.
When the highs don't get out of the 50s and lows are 40s and 30s, the house cools down into the low 60s pretty fast... and that's just a bit
too chilly... Come winter, with the temps even lower, the house can
cool off to the 50s when the furnace is turned off overnight...

different varieties of apples, but no Empires yet....
Hopefully we'll have some down here before Thanksgiving. A
couple of years ago one of my cousins gave us some when we were
in NYS in early November so I'm hoping they'll be in soon.
Good chance now... I did see them in our store yesterday when
we went shopping...
We picked up a couple of bags when we were at Wegman's a week ago last Friday.
There you go... :)
peach NB>>> does sound pretty nice... :) Maybe next time the ownerwasn't that impressed so went with my usual chocolate.(G)
One can always default to the usual... ;) But the roasted

Like we've said, that doesn't particularly slow our ice cream
consumption much... ;)
It used to not be so for us but habits change over the years. (G)
What has changed for us is that we eat less ice cream at home than we
used to, now that Fu has such good ice cream available... ;)
I know the feeling. Makes me wonder how I did all I did when I
was younger.
You were younger, for one thing... ;)
That explains part of it, probably a good part of it. (G)
I thought so.... (G)
Unfortunatly, we can't go back in time, either physically or
otherwise.
Quite true....
Do we really want to? Thought so. (G)
Maybe we should change that unfortunately to Fortunately... ;)

We've had yo-yo weather--in the low 80s yesterday & today but
to be in the mid 60s by the latter part of the week. Finally
getting some rain but Steve has been able to grill some fast
cooking meats (chicken, beef) between showers the last few days.
You still have the overhead coverings on the porch set up...?
Yes but he used the small gas grill to save the prolonged preheat
time. He did use the egg grill (charcoal) to do a porterhouse steak for his birthday. Had a clear day and we had the time to for charcoal.
I came home from the Pond the next to last trip to find that
Richard had started using the furnace for this season... we
usually put that off as long as we can... :)
You must have had quite the cold snap.
When the highs don't get out of the 50s and lows are 40s and
30s, the house cools down into the low 60s pretty fast... and
that's just a bit too chilly... Come winter, with the temps
even lower, the house can cool off to the 50s when the furnace is
turned off overnight...
We've been down to the upper 30s the past couple of days. Daytime
highs have been in the mid to upper 50s but by the end of this week,
we're supposed to be in the mid 40s during the day, mid 20s at night. Brrrrrr! Low 30s predicted for our area tonight.
(Peach loaf)
That's my thinking, will give it a try tomorrow. We sliced the whole loaf, kept some in the fridge and wrappedMay try toasting it lightly to bring out the peach flavor even
the rest for the freezer to enjoy over the winter.
more.
And how did that turn out....?
Spaced out, will try to remember to do it another time.
Have to report when you do remember to try it... :)
I will, when I get that round tuit. (G)

I did do the pumpkin roll, and in the mean time, found some recipies
that might be adaptable to peach bread. Have to see how many jars of peaches I've got on hand to experiment with.

When we were first married, we did our laundry once a week at a laundromat. We'd get ice cream cones dirt cheap at a convenience store afterward. By the time we moved into another house & got our own
machines, the cone prices had gone up/size of scoop down so we didn't
go out for it as much. Having babies further reduced our time out/ice cream cone buying until the girls got older. We bought more ice cream
at home, but because of finances, it wasn't that often. We've probably bought more here in WF than anywhere else in years.
