We also have our seldom used cell phones. We know multiple
people who no longer have any sort of land line but only use
    their cell phone for everything

We ditched our landlines and we're saving a ton of money as we both
need cell phones for our work anyway. I still have an office phone
but we dropped both our home line and Roslind's office line. As
well, my cell phone replaces my alarm clock, wristwatch, camera, GPS
and camera. It also serves as a compass, level and flashlight and
allows me to monitor my work email when I'm out of the office.
    Bonus: far fewer telemarketers.

    As are many other folks.

well, my cell phone replaces my alarm clock, wristwatch, camera, GPS
and camera. It also serves as a compass, level and flashlight and
allows me to monitor my work email when I'm out of the office.

Our cell phone do none of that -- we only have dumb cell phones that we
carry for emergency purposes. The flashlight part of it brings to mind
a story though. When we were on our Ireland tour, the coach stopped at
a planned stop in a small town. Turns out that a construction crew had
severed the town's main underground power line, shutting down power to
the entire town. We hung out near a gift shop for a while hoping that
they might get it restored (they didn't). When the urge to visit the
head came upon me, the only source of light I had was the flash on my
camera. Ended up with several shots of men's urinals.

    Bonus: far fewer telemarketers.

I've heard that that is becoming less and less true, at least here in
the states. Cell phone numbers are not distinguished from land line
numbers, at least in the area code, and a lot of the telemarketers are
simply war dialing all possible numbers hoping for a hot phone.

I've found that my dumb phone serves as a flashlight without an app...
When the backlight is on full on, it works just fine as a flashlight,
when it goes to dim, I just get it to go back to full on... I've walked
from car to inside camp that way when it's dark, even through the
porch.... and inside the camp, when the lights aren't on... and in
    similar situations... :)

So far all of my scam/spam calls to my cell start with my area code and
prefix (585-259-xxxx)... and are the computer-generated perky female
voice telling me that I've earned all these points staying at their
resort that I qualify for this free trip.... at least any that I've
    actually answered.... (G)

Our cell phone numbers here are all unlisted and they have their own
exchanges. As a lot of people still pay for incoming calls by the
minute, unsolicited sales calls are very illegal and the fines
heavy. The only calls I ever get are not random but targeted to
real estate agents. My cell phone number is of course easily found
on a number of real estate websites because I put it on them. Once I
say that I am not interested and to put me on a do not call list I
am never bothered again by Canadian companies, just American and
other foreign ones. When they call again I am EXTREMELY rude and
that often does the trick. I get about one nuisance call a month at
    most.

As a business person, you cannot afford to ignore incoming calls. As a
retired person, I have no problem ignoring calls from people I do not
have in my white list on the phone. If someone really wants to talk
with me, they can leave a message on my voice mail. I will at least
listen to such messages, and if it is really a person I care to
communicate with, then I will add them to my white list. My phone has a different ring tone for those who are listed there.
