From JIM WELLER@1:123/140 to EDITH MCKLVEEN on Saturday, September 15, 2018 19:28:00

To those of you who were not very recently gathered in
    Bloomfield, NY, hello.

And I'm Jim Weller, originally from rural Ontario but I have spent
over half my life in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories.
Background is British (Yorkshire and Cornwall) with a little
Scottish and German. My wife Roslind is French Canadian with a
little Scottish and Cree Indian heritage, from rural northern
    Alberta. We met here.

We both love to cook but Roslind does the bulk of the baking. We
like experimenting and trying new ethnic recipes from around the
world, especially spicy but not necessarily fiery dishes.

She is borderline diabetic (diet controlled so far) but neither of
us have any food allergies, so we pretty much eat and drink whatever
    we want.

I essentially went on a four-day food bender

Those gatherings tend to be like that!

I am looking forward to adventures in the cooking echo.

Before the Internet became easily accessible our group numbered in
the hundreds but we are now down to a dozen or so hard core old
timers, so it has become quite an intimate little group who have
    known each other for years.

    Welcome!

    Cheers

    Jim

It appears that I can now search for and find **my** mail. Thanks
    to the sysop!

Greetings to, undoubtedly, a235th cousin. You and your lady wife are living the good life. Not easy, not simple, but good.

I keep hearing people say they would love to grow their own vegetables and
make their own bread and whatnot, but it's soooo labor-intensive.

    Duh. Really?

When my mother was growing up poor on a Depression-era farm in Alabama, she
and her five sisters still ate well; my grandparents apparently challenged
each other during the summer to grow the biggest, best, most vegetables.

When she left home to work in Atlanta, Georgia during WWII, she would occasionally take the train home to get fresh eggs to barter with when ration coupons were in short supply.

Being able to grow food, make food, and share food is certainly worth the effort.

    Edith

Shawn does have redeeming qualities every once in a while. :D

(I have been friends with Shawn for over 20 years now and he taught me a lot of what I know about BBSing back in the day. I like to poke at him with a sharp stick every now and again to rattle the hornet's nest...)

Has he introduced you to offline mail yet?

Leaving that one up to Nancy! Hoping her wizard will install dosbox and
show Edith Bluewave that way. :) (That's the way I use it!)

I prefer vDOS for running dos programs in Win7 or Win10. I have
shortcuts for my MealMaster that invoke the appropriate magic spells.
As far as Bluewave is concerned, I prefer running that in a virtual
window with Win XP. Both DosBox and vDos have problems with Bluewave.
One can be fixed via a patch, but the other cannot be. The fixable one
has to do with an error when BW is packing up its QWK packet and not
finding a file it needs (that it had deleted). The one that cannot be
fixed (to my knowledge) is perhaps only a slight annoyance. When BW
runs in XP, it does not update the time stamp on the QWK packet. With
both vDOS and DosBox, the time stamp is updated. That leads to a
problem of not being able to see stats on the QWK packets in the BW
    opening menu.

A big advantage for vDOS is that it has the ability to print. DosBox
    does not.

There's a new update to DOSBox that has fixed a lot of issues and there's a
new version of DOSbox coming out soon. I'm not sure if the issue you talk about can be fixed but it sounds like the manual refresh issue in DOSbox
(where if you change any files, you have to hit CTRL-F4 for the emulator to re-read the file table).

    Title: Ma's Shortbread Cookies
    Categories: Cookie, Bread, Christmas
    Yield: 1 Servings

    1 lb Butter
    1 c Icing sugar
    3 1/2 c All purpose flour
    1/2 c Corn starch

Put butter and icing sugar in a bowl and beat for AT LEAST HALF AN
HOUR. Add flour and corn starch; don't beat, knead until it starts to
crack. Use a cooky press or whatever you wish; bake the cookies at
350 F. for about 11 minutes. Cookies are done when golden brown
    around the edges.

In this case "Ma" happens to be my wonderful mother who with my dad
kept their three sons fed, clothed, happy, and ignorant of the fact
that they were actually dirt poor by most people's standards while
    they grew up.

Never had a problem with either of those. Maybe I'm just lucky! At least
    I'm lucky sometimes!

A big advantage for vDOS is that it has the ability to print. DosBox

Well there's always a way! I print to txt files and just fire them into
notepad / gnotepad to print. But yes I understand your point.

We're working on that... She's got Windows 10, which can be more of an
issue with dos things.... He did get the Window10 version of Multimail
onto her computer, and maybe installed there... but I don't know if
she's had the chance yet to try to figure it out....
