Monday morning was a rash of tasting (nothing mew),
gobbling, and gabbing, and it wasn't until after noon
that the party began to break up.

I got a ride southward with the Shipps, and we took off
maybe around 2 into a steady rainstorm, which continued
with greater or lesser intensity until we got back.

We stopped for gas and pits a couple times, and I picked
up a token purchase at both. So at our first stop, a
7-Eleven, I got the mystery flavor Slurpee, which turned
out to be a slime green slightly spicy slurry with what
we detected as apple-pear artificial-butter-popcorn; so
what the heck could that be. Our next stop was at a Sheetz,
where I was delighted to see Grandma Utz potato chips, my
favorite, as they are thickish-cut and cooked in lard.
Much better than normal chips, and they took away the bad
taste memories of the Utz flavored chips at the picnic.

It was dark by the time we got to Maryland. The days are
getting shorter, with the accompanying annual depression.
We had thought to go to Popeye's, as Pioneer Pit Beef,
the best bargain food destination within many miles,
had long closed for the night; but then I remembered
that there was another pit beef place not far from
there, and because of the proximity to the champion,
nobody in our acquaintance ever had bothered to try
it, so I proposed to do so, being in a more beefy mood
than chickeny. So after a few auto gyraions we found
ourselves at Kirkwood, a tiny storefront with an order
window, a pickup window, a table of sorts, and two
stools. The menu is much bigger than Pioneer's, with
barbecue things and barbecue fixings on the list. We
all stuck to purism; Gail got a medium pit beef sandwich
rare with tiger sauce, Dale a large same, and myself a
    large witnout any topping.

    The meat was good-tasting and tender but rather salty;
the doneness ranging from well done on the outside, with
a bit of a char, to almost rare enough in the middle. The
bun was the usual squishy not very tasty bulkie-style roll
    - not a bad thing, because the meat flavor should shine
out over the whole sandwich. Root beers to go with.

Back chez Shipp, where Bryan was in residence but just
fixing to leave. We chatted briefly, and then I had a
beer before catching a few hours of shuteye; they caught
a few television shows. For me 0300 came way too soon. We
were at the airport 20 minutes before security opened.

It rained consistently from home to Williamsport for me. A nine and a half hour trip in the rain. Then it rained all week. Caught a partial break Friday by the time I'd hit just south of Roanoke but Saturday night, the rain started again and it's still raining. It hasn't stopped for two days straight.

    Later,
    Sean
