Wegmans have their own egg farms that supply their eggs... They've
done regular testing, and have never had any issues with salmonella
being found, whether in the eggs, on the eggs, or in their chickens...
I'm sure they have fairly rigid requirements on cleanliness and rodent control...

    Loblaws in Canada is similar. They don't just rely on government;
they send their own inspectors out on surprise visits all up and
down their supply line, especially in China. They got really serious
about that with food after the infamous melamine in milk scandal.
And after those two horrible disasters in the Bangladesh garment
industry their "Joe Fresh" discount clothing subsidiary started
inspecting clothing factory working conditions too.

One incident there involved illegally converting a multi-storey
office building into a sewing factory full of heavy equipment which subsequently collapsed injuring and killing hundreds. The second one
was chaining and locking fire exits to deter theft instead of
spending money on cameras and an alarm or security guards. Again
    hundreds died.

Although not directly liable, Loblaws along with several North
American and European department stores, together with a number of
individual wealthy celebrities who had lent their names to clothing
labels voluntarily donated millions to the families of the injured
and killed workers. Most notably Walmart did not. Yet another reason
    to boycott them!

Dunno as Wegmans has any suppliers of foods from China, except, perhaps
for their lines of canned/jarred/etc chinese foods... For their fresh
foods, meats/veggies/fruits/fish/cheese etc... they are very picky as to
who they pick to supply, and keep an on-going eye on all the
operations... they also tend to go for smaller, family businesses,
whether their "farms local to us" products or the ones the import from
further away... and look for sustainability and quality control... They
got caught in the melamine in cat and dog food problem since their
supplier hadn't been careful... those were off the shelves quickly...
and they changed suppliers as well..

And after those two horrible disasters in the Bangladesh garment
industry their "Joe Fresh" discount clothing subsidiary started
inspecting clothing factory working conditions too.

    Good for them.

One incident there involved illegally converting a multi-storey
office building into a sewing factory full of heavy equipment which subsequently collapsed injuring and killing hundreds. The second one
was chaining and locking fire exits to deter theft instead of
spending money on cameras and an alarm or security guards. Again

I think I heard of the second incident...

A fine gesture... hopefully appreciated and helpful...

Most notably Walmart did not. Yet another reason to boycott them!

And yet another reason for old Sam to be rolling in his grave... Walmart
is a store I don't willingly go to....
