So why doesn't the CDC tell us not to swim?
Very good question... probably because they know it wouldn't have much
of an effect... and the swim issue is kept in perspective... But people are already prejudiced against raw oysters, so they can build on that... or something like that... (G)
Still. How many Americans this year have et an oyster?
A million? Ten million? Fifty million? And one death.
Compare with 15 deaths from lightning strike, 24
kids cooked in cars, and over 2000 drowning
    (unintentional, non-boating-related).
Exactly. One really does need to keep things in perspective... :)

The question has been raised how many people actually
eat oysters, and my top-of-head answer would be probably
a lot more than go outside during thunderstorms.

It'll take a few generations of awfulness first.
Generations of germs or of people...? ;)
Of people. Billions of generations of germs
getting ever-smarter and ever-hardier while we
just go, oh, a few squirts of hand sanitizer and
    everything will be okay.
Meanwhile making ourselves more vulnerable.... ;)

That's the rub, if you will. I've always been
    hostile to the widespread use of antibacteriala;
didn't think much about alcohol, though until
    recently. I always preferred high-percentage
propyl when I could get it, and now that 70%
appears to be the minimum reliable germkilling
    concentration, that preference should become
    more widespread.

... To kill bacteria cook your turkey until an inserted thermometer
    melts.
That sort of stuff seems to be the trend in
health advice. Let's all go vegan while we're
    at it.
It seemed to me to be over the top enough to be obviously overkill...

To me a turkey cooked to the recommended 180 has
no more appeal than one burnt up.

    Fire in the sky

    1 1/2 oz Jack Daniel˙s Tennessee Fire

over fresh ice into a Collins glass. Top with a
    mild ginger beer.

You'd think. There's a balance between not spreading germs and
encouraging the germs to evolve into being more resistant...

    Indeed. :)
