    It was almost a joke on my part. Connie was under strict instructions

    her dad, collect, nightly and inform him of where we were (I still
    really think
    he had a map with pins in it). And as I said, with a name like that...

    The run from Banff to Jasper is up the Canadian Rockies, a couple of
    National
    Parks are in the way also, very, very scenic.

    I thought of doing that with Lilli once, but
    extended auto trips look less likely - I've
    mapped out a route back to Paris from Toulouse
    that takes three days - I figure that's good
    enough for our attention span and endurance.

    When I worked for the Comptroller out at Elemendorf I took the computer and warped the Cost of Living numbers to show that the Canadian forces should actually get an increase in their allowance, instead of the reduction
    they were
    to get. It's actually pretty common to see rented RV's out of Canada
    on the
    roads around here. But then again Condor does do the Frankfurt ->
    Whitehorse
    Anchorage -> Frankfurt route, and a lot of Germans get off in
    Whitehorse to
    tour the Yukon and then head over to Alaska (spending months on their
    trip).
    The last time we drug the RV up we were sitting in a RV park in Dawson
    Creek
    surrounded by a bevy of Belgians driving rented RV's. About 18 of
    them, cloned
    RV's, out of Calgary with their minders leading and following. They were slowly making their way to Dawson City and then a ferry ride over to
    Alaska.
    It was spring and I do know the Yukon River was still frozen over, so I
    don't
    know how they did. The guy who owned the RV park in Watson Lake was
    waiting
    for them to show up, when we left.

    traffic is in any way tied to that Condor route, won't
    there be a buildup of surplus equipment in Anchorage?

    Jewish! Who cares about that! With squid in it did you really expect
    me to
    eat that? But as I told you once, when I was a kid in Hawaii we used
    to get a
    dried/salted octosquid tentacle to gnaw on while walking around.

    Yah, the reference in the earlier post was to pasta
    squares with dairy sauce, a Jewish dish. Obviously
    my subconscious preferred the idea of pork and squid.

    Ate a lot of this recently, OK in January/February, plus I'm listening
    to the

    Today's recipe theme, misinterpretations of
    this worthy but salty dish.

    ... Boneless skinless chicken, 2 for a quarter, 3 for 50cents.

    Rationalized by rationing.

    Kahlua Pork Chops
    categories: main, fake Hawaiian
    servings: 6

    2 ts Olive Oil
    6 Pork Chops
    2 ts Brown Sugar
    1 ts Worcestershire Sauce
    1/2 c Kahlua
    1/3 c Pineapple Juice
    1 c Pineapple (chunks)
    1/4 c Pecans (chopped)

    Place pork chops in pan with heated olive oil and brown.

    Mix all liquid ingredients in a bowl, then add to
    cooking pork chops.

    Add pineapple and pecans. Cook for about 20 min until
    sauce thickens somewhat (or to preference).

    (Note those whose religious observances might forbid
    the drinking of alcohol: There is a common concept
    prevalent that alcohol used in food preparation is
    burned off when cooked. This is true but only
    partially so. In truth, according to Chow.com, even
    though alcohol has a lower boiling temperature than
    water and will burn off, not all alcohol is eliminated
    simply by applying heat. They cite a 2003 study by the
    USDA’s Nutrient Data Laboratory that showed that the
    amount of alcohol retained in a cooked dish depends on
    the method by which it is cooked. Baking seems to

    So fix some mashed potatoes with chives and a leafy
    salad to go with your Kahlua Pork Chops. Then, to top
    off the celebration, make yourself a Kahlua Coffee.

    Oh the ferry portion, other than the exceptional weather, was like the other two times I'd ridden it (PR to Ketchikan and back), not very comfortable. Berthing is/was extremely limited (and none was provided for us), luckily I think we left PR early in the morning, stopped in Ketchikan for a few hours (long enough to dump people/vehicles off and onload another batch), Petersburg (ditto), Sitka (ditto, although we took the dog for a run on the beach where he
    experienced salt water for the first time [thought it was a pretty dirty joke we played on him when he took a big gulp of water and promptly coughed]), and finally into Haines...2+(?) days.

    Longest I think she ever made it was 3 weeks, and that was PITAToo.

    What does one do for feline companionship in Muldoon?

    I could get one if I wanted, the rules allow 2 animals, but my schedule is: Halloween to April Fools day in Lake Havasu, back here and June to September 3+
    days per week in Kasilof, the remainder here in Anchorage. Unless I take off and do silly things like go to Europe. IOW, the cat(s), or dog(s) would be a giant anchor. Almost as bad as kids, and Connie and I decided before we married we didn't want to grow up and have kids.

    Ahh...what have "we" decided on the car? My itinerary is filling in nicely. Decided to take a day and run over to Bastogne from Luxembourg, see the Sherman

    Oh those were almost all from Anchorage. Sounds crazy but I think it's cheaper
    to rent a RV/parking spot than to try and get rooms/transportation for all the
    places people visit. We met a guy down in Soldotna one year, pilot of some form from someplace in the mideast, who flew into town, rented a car, bought minimal equipment, slept in the car for a month or more, and then abandoned the
    camping equipment when he left (said it was cheaper than shipping it over). Loaned him our portable gas grill one night. But I suspect there are people making the reverse run to get most of the equipment back. When Connie and I flew that route back in 2000 the people on the plane were talking about spending their entire summer touring Alaska/Yukon. The people next to us in the terminal (mom/dad/2 kids, from Italy) had just returned from a 2 week float
    trip. Good flight though, free German beer, and smoking (both of us smoked at
    the time) since it was a charter flight. Should have seen the flight attendants running up and down the aisles selling cartons of American smokes.

    Bird House on the Seward Highway, burned down but recreated inside of Chilkoot Charlies (logo reads "Where we cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you"), sold those. That was the sign on the big jar of hardboiled eggs at the original bar.

    Title: Poutines Rapees
    Categories: Canadian, Pork
    Yield: 20 servings

    20 md Potatoes,raw,peeled
    2 c Cooked mashed potatoes
    Salt
    Pepper
    1 md Grated Onion
    1 lb Salt fat pork,finely cubed

    Cube pork fat and place in water.Grate raw potatoes and strain with a
    cheese cloth.Mix some of this with the mashed potatoes,salt,pepper and
    onion to make a ball.Place some of the pork fat in the middle of the
    ball. Simmer in salted water for two hours.Serve hot with a bit of
    Maple syrup.
