I took it in the first place only out of
politeness to the doctor, not for any valid
therapeutic reason. Hitherto I've always
refused this always recommended regimen.

And hereafter, you have yet more ammunition for not doing it again... Politeness to the doctor has not been sufficient reason for me to give
in to what I'm sure is a bad call.... :) Sometimes one just has to
stand firm...
