Las Vegas right at midnight - now there's excess
electricity consumption. You can see it from dozens of
miles away - I wouldn't be surprised if the light
pollution could be seen at Mt. Palomar.
In 1998, I was playing Army at the National Training Center that is
    part of
Fort Irwin, CA (out west of Barstow). One night, I found myself on the
    very
extreme northwest part of the installation and using binoculars, I
    could make
out Vegas pretty easily. I don't know how far away I was but I was
    probably
    within less than 100 miles.

Nowadays that rather egregious city is bigger,
sprawlier, and more wasteful. In addition to all
the electricity, which it probably gets relatively
cheaply from hydro power but also could do well
with solar, it is a huge water drain, which is the
part that really concerns me (as well as many of
    the communities downstream).

No recipe today but I've been sampling at a few nice eateries in
    Williamsport
during my stay here (I will be driving home to TN tomorrow).

Don't worry about the recipe, we'll just put
    it on your tab.

    Chicken Las Vegas
categories: easy, southern, five, main, poultry
    servings: 6

6 boneless chicken breast halves, without skin
1 c cream of mushroom soup
    1 c sour cream
6 oz jar dried, chipped beef

Mix together soup, sour cream, and dried beef.
    Roll chicken in the mixture, coating well;
place in crockpot. Pour remaining mixture over
chicken. Cover and cook on low for 5 to 7 hr,
until chicken is tender but not dried out.

Serve with hot cooked rice or noodles.

When the water dries up, so does the city. Last time I was there in 2004,
it was 104F at 2 AM. Not the most pleasant.

As seen on a local pharmacy's road sign:

"A DUCK CAME IN AND ASKED FOR CHAPSTICK. HE THEN ASKED TO PUT IT ON HIS
    BILL."
