The Doner place has a better chance of having
    survived than Woolworth's.
Probably so; we gavve it a good bit of business when we lived in Berlin.
It was the closest one to where we lived; when we were out and about, we
did eat at other places for doners, also enjoyed products of a lot of
    wurst stands.

Turns out the name lives on in Germany as well as
in South Africa and Oceania, but none of the
enterprises has any relation to the original,
which is well and truly dead.

Lilli's laptop video can be sent directly to TV.
Mine probably can also but it's just as easy to work with it on my
lap > and have the screen closer. Much easier for me to read.
But looking at video is better on the bigger
screen, at least as far as I can see.
Depends on the video, if it's worth big screen watching or not.

Swisher was trying to educate me on 480 vs. 720
resolution video, but it went right over my head,
as I wouldn't be able to see the difference.

That's terra incognita for me - Ive been to
Potsdam maybe 3 times, the first shortly after
the reunification, and the place was a shambles.
    Pretty spiffed up now.
We did go over to Potsdam a few times to visit a family in our church
who lived there. Also visited a palace (forgot who's it was) one time.

Frederick the Great, as I recall.

Sadly, elsewhere, earthquakes are not the most
likely - human intervention of the bad sort being
    more common.
As we've seen in so many urban places around the world...........

Raising the question of whether we ever as a
    species learn anything.

    Famous Black & White Cookies
    categories: dessert, New York
    servings: 20

    1 1/4 c Flour
    1/2 ts Baking soda
    1/2 ts Salt
    6 Tb Unsalted butter softened
    1/2 c Sugar
    1 Egg
    1/2 ts Vanilla
    1/2 c Buttermilk
    h - Frosting
    2 c Powdered sugar sugar
2 1/2 ts Fresh lemon juice
    1/4 ts Vanilla
    1 Tb Light corn syrup
    1 ts Light corn syrup
    1 Tb Cocoa powder
    1 Tb Water

    Preheat oven to 350F.

Sift flour, baking soda, and salt - set aside.

Mix butter until creamy. Add sugar, mix till
fluffy - scrape down sides. Mix in egg and
vanilla. Starting with flour mixture, add
to butter mixture alternating with buttermilk
in 3 batches - dough will be sticky

Use 2 standard teaspoons to spoon dough onto
    parchment paper lined cookie sheets.

Bake until bottoms are golden brown, about
10 min. Allow to rest on cookie sheet 10 min
    before transferring to wire rack

Flip upside down as this is the side that will
be frosted - make sure to put wax paper under
wire rack, it'll save you a huge mess!

Whisk powdered sugar, corn syrup, lemon juice,
vanilla extract and water. Frosting should be
slightly thicker than honey. Frost 1/2 of each
    cookie with white frosting.

Return remaining frosting to mixer. Add cocoa
powder and mix - may need to add additional
water and powdered sugar to get consistency to
a bit thicker then honey. Mix in food coloring.

Frost other side of cookie and allow to set 30 min.

Sad to say. I remember going to that WWs about 3 weeks after the wall
came down, on a Monday morning, wanted to buy a few Christmas knick
knacks for relatives in the States. Had to wait in the check out line
for about half an hour as so many "easties" were buying stuff they
couldn't get on the eastern side.

    read.

It's one of these techno-nerdy things anyway. (G)

Debatable. Those that overindulge in something to the point of pain and
keep repeating it--you would think they'd have learned the first time
    but no...........................

A friend's mom gave me a more basic version of this recipe years ago; I
don't think she got it from NY.
