    underwater oilfields
    underwater would creep me out
He's on top of a platform; he doesn't go underwater.

    Ah, much better.

most of those places, especially Texas (which is a country in
its own mind, anyway), seem unnecessarily hazardous to me.
In a lot of those places he was living in a gated community of
foreign workers. And some places he doesn't take his family with
    him.

Ah, much better, though one doesn't get much local
color that way. Of course, when the local color is
blood red, that may not be too much of a loss.

Ironically Texas was the only place he ever had difficulties in. His
current wife and youngest daughter are Venezuelan and they were not
treated nicely in Houston, so they moved from the US to Chile.

Texas can be troublesome, yes indeed.

Barry now speaks excellent Spanish. (As you can imagine, they
certainly don't want to live in Venezuela anymore. They abandoned a
large beautiful villa in Caracas last year.) He is currently working

My uncle George has or had such a property outside
Caracas. I don't know if he's still alive. He used to
lean on me to visit (and United had flights there) and
all of a sudden changed his tune and told me not to
bother (this was even before Chavez). During the Chavez
days my aunt was kidnapped, but she refused to call
and arrange for the ransom, so they dropped her in the
middle of nowhere, naked but alive. She eventually made
it back home, and they went to the police, where they
found the kidnappers, who were behind the desk at the
station. Oh, well. One could have guessed, as if the
kidnappers had not been cops, she would likely not have
    been left alive.

in Saudi Arabia but was in Canada last August. We saw him on our
reunion weekend in Alberta in August.

    He must have had stories.

    Title: Savory Chiroti

I was unaware of this variety.

Chiroti is an Indian deep-fried snack that's eaten during Diwali.
It's usually served sweet, sometimes finished with powdered sugar
and sometimes dipped in sugar syrup. This savory version is loaded
with black pepper, but make no mistake, it's just as perfect for
    Diwali as its sweet counterpart.

Sounds maybe more or less interesting.

    Doughnuts
    Categories: Indian, American, dessert, breakfast
    Yield: 20

    3 1/2 c maida - or cake flour
    1 ts salt
    5 ts baking powder
    1 ts cinnamon powder
    1 ts nutmeg powder
    2 Tb butter
    3 c sugar
    2 eggs, beaten well
    3 c milk
    oil for deep frying

Sift maida with salt, baking powder, cinnamon, and
    nutmeg and set aside.

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add
milk and maida and mix to a dough. Roll the dough on
a lightly floured surface to 1" thickness.

Cut with floured doughnut cutter and let stand 15 min.

Heat oil over high heat and add the doughnuts. Turn
immediately and lower heat to medium and fry until
    brown.

Drain on absorbent paper and serve.

For a country with so much potential (more oil than Saudi Arabia) it
is utter madness that it has become such a poverty stricken and
    dangerous hell hole.

    He must have had stories.

It was mostly him asking us to help him catch up on news about us!
