• 251 picnic tastes

From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to NANCY BACKUS on Monday, November 18, 2019 08:45:54
I think the most I've ever had at a time was half a can of it, years
ago... I think I stopped in time to not have consequences.... (G)
    How big was the can?
The standard 16 oz size, as I recall...

That of course was the soft fluffy stuff made with a
lot of glucose syrup, where the most troublesome agent
would be the regular sugar rather than the indigestible
ones of the bean paste. Leading me to the question of
whether anyone has ever died as a direct result of
    eating beans.

If given the chance, I might be tempted to overdo on Fu's homemade
stuff, though.... that stuff is really good...
And not too difficult to make.
    Apparently... :)

The solid snacking version is also easy to make.

I liked durian ok... only had a small taste though, on my way leaving
that first picnic at Janis's I'd gotten to.... someday I wouldn't mind tasting it again... :)
There was enough so you could have had more.
I know... but I needed to be on the road, as I needed to get to my
family's camping, that year at Gilbert Lake State park...

    There's always room for durian.

I like other tropical flavors... some more than others... ;)
Of course we all have our preferences. Mine is
everything except pineapple and dragonfruit, but
Lilli has a dragonfruit plant in her yard that
has the best examples I've ever tasted. Pineapple
is okay but reams out my mouth.
I do ok with pineapple... And we've had dragonfruit from Wegmans a
coulpe of times.. it was ok... fresh from the plant probably would be
    good... ;)

Lilli's beats the best I'vw had in Asia; Weggie's,
estimable though it is, would certainly not be able
to best even the Asian ones.

The zero juice did grate on me a bit.
Indeed... it would have been nice to have had some real juice content, but I imagine they were trying to keep the carb/sugar content down...
    I'm imagining they didn't care.
Possibly.... or they were thinking of whatever niche market they were
    really aiming the drink at....
Who knows; I'm not generally into energy drinks or their
    clientele.
    Neither am I....

Some people seem to need them, especially when
    it's hot out.

Bonnie's son is over for a visit, and he's on a renal
diet, low sodium and low potassium among other things.
I made him a steak for dinner, and I asked how he liked
it, and he said with a soy marinade! I had to gently
disabuse him of a notion or two and made him one with
balsamic-and-garlic glaze. He put salt on it.
Even the steak was probably on the edge of acceptability on his diet, as
I understand the renal diet is also low on protein, as that is hard for

There's a proliferation of diets, depending on the
person and the specific condition. Dietitians are
also conceptually vague sometimes. Jerry's diet was
    not low-protein, for some reason.

the kidneys to process... one of my brothers-in-law has renal problems, too.... And some people do have a hard time with restrictions....

When I was on the blood pressure diet, it was hard
to get up to the recommended level of sodium.

    Mizu Yokan
    categories: Japanese, dessert
    servings: 4

    1 c water
    1 ts sugar
    7 g pk agar-agar/kanten
1 c azuki paste (red bean paste)
    1 pn salt

Mix water, sugar, and agar-agar. Use medium heat.
    Stir continuously until it boils.

Turn off the heat. Add salt and mix well.

Add azuki paste and mix well, stirring until the
mixture is even in color and texture.

Pour into mold. Cut when it is firm.

I don't recall it as being particularly soft or fluffy... It was a while
    ago, though...

Leading me to the question of whether anyone has ever
died as a direct result of eating beans.

Not that I know of, but not that I've really paid attention to such
things... Possible that one could be allergic to them, though....

If given the chance, I might be tempted to overdo on Fu's homemade
stuff, though.... that stuff is really good...

I think that that is what Fu makes.... he cuts it into slices when he
    serves it...

I liked durian ok... only had a small taste though, on my way leaving that first picnic at Janis's I'd gotten to.... someday I wouldn't mind tasting it again... :)

Won't argue that... ;) As I said, it was a time constraint, not a space one.... In retrospect, I should probably have taken a larger chumk to
take with me... And also in retrospect, I should have planned more time
for the picnic.... but it was my first picnic, and the same weekend as
my family's camping was starting.... :)

Have you tried Weggie's...? I didn't have the others to compare
    against, obviously... :)

You were already used to having a lot less than they allowed...
