He only got paid once a month so it made sense to do the bulk of the shopping then. When we first got married, the job he had paid weekly.
We did our grocery shopping weekly then. When he was downsized from
that one (nobody was buying cabin cruisers during the recession of 79),
he found a job that paid every other week so we adjusted our grocery buying habits accordingly. So, it was not much of an adjustment to go
from every other week to once a month--quantities of things increased
some but part of that was that the girls were growing older (and
    consuming more) as well.

When we lived in England in the early 70's, we observed that some of the
Brits when shopping every day. Made it almost a full time job,
especially since one might have to go to multiple stores to get all of
the things you wanted (e.g. butcher, baker, produce, fruits might all be different stores).

    Hi Dale,

He only got paid once a month so it made sense to do the bulk of the shopping then. When we first got married, the job he had paid weekly.
We did our grocery shopping weekly then. When he was downsized from
that one (nobody was buying cabin cruisers during the recession of 79),
he found a job that paid every other week so we adjusted our grocery buying habits accordingly. So, it was not much of an adjustment to go
from every other week to once a month--quantities of things increased
some but part of that was that the girls were growing older (and
    consuming more) as well.

When we lived in England in the early 70's, we observed that some of
the Brits when shopping every day. Made it almost a full time job,

Germans did it too, but bought double on Saturdays and didn't shop on
Sundays. When we were over there, stores were closed on Sundays. They
closed early (2pm) on all Saturdays except the first Saturday of the
month when they were open until 6, their normal during the week closing
time. Had to make sure you got what you wanted earlier in the day. (G)

especially since one might have to go to multiple stores to get all of
the things you wanted (e.g. butcher, baker, produce, fruits might all
    be different stores).

There was a market in Frankfurt not too far from where we lived that had
a good assortment of things--not a supermarkeet by any means, more like
a 7-11 in size. There was a full on supermarket in Berlin near the commissary/px plaza that I went to fairly often for things I couldn't
get at the commissary. I didn't see as many of the small, specialised
shops in Berlin as I did in Frankfurt--they were probably there but not
as noticeable. We did know where a convenient bakery was tho. (G)
