I know Aleppo is in Syria, but tell that to the Turks. We
don't realize the depth of stability Ataturk brought to
    that part of the world.

At the expense of a whole lot of Kurds, Greeks and Armenians!

Maybe there's also an Aleppo in Turkey

Sort of. Aleppo is the name of both the capital city and the
province it's in, which is in northern Syria up against the Turkish
border. A lot of the historical Aleppo region ended up inside modern
Turkey when the Great Powers carved up the former Ottoman Empire
(rather badly ... those borders are still a source of discontent
today) at the end of WWI.

For example, the Kurds should have gotten their own country but they
are still stuck spread out in southeastern Turkey, northwestern
Iran, northern Iraq, and northern Syria and they are disliked and
persecuted in all four of those countries.

    ---------- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

    Title: Besan Barfee
Categories: Indian, Candy, Nuts, Vegetarian, Beans
    Yield: 144 servings

1 1/4 c Chick pea flour; (besan or
    Gram flour
    1 c Vegetable oil
    1 1/3 c Sugar
    1/2 ts Cardamom seeds; ground
    3 tb Pistachios; unsalted
    -lightly crushed
    2 tb Almonds, blanched,
    -coarsely chopped

Sift the chick pea flour. Heat oil in a heavy, 10-12" frying pan,
wok or saute pan over a medium flame. Put in the sifted chick pea
flour. Stir and fry 2 to 3 minutes until the flour turns a shade
darker and is cooked (it should taste fried, not raw). Put the
flour into a large bowl, stir at once and allow to cool.

Make a syrup with 1 cup water and the 1 1/3 c sugar by bringing
the water-sugar combination to a boil and then simmering very
gently for about 20 minutes or until the syrup reaches a one
thread consistency. (To test this, dip in a wooden spoon and let
coat slightly. Pinch some syrup off the back of the spoon with two
fingers and then try separating the fingers. One sticky thread
should form. This is the Indian method. If you have a better one,
    use it.)

Pour the hot syrup in the cooled chick pea flour/gram flour
mixture. add the ground cardamom seeds and the nuts and mix well.
keep stirring until mixture begins to harden slightly. (It should
still be pourable.) Pour into a 9 inch square cake tin, tilt tin
so barfee mixture flows to the edges and allow to cool. Cut into
3/4 inch cubes. besan barfee if tightly wrapped in aluminium foil
and then placed in a plastic container, freezes very well.

OK, that makes sense... So it could reasonably be used as a name for a
    Turkish company and/or their products...

For example, the Kurds should have gotten their own country but they
are still stuck spread out in southeastern Turkey, northwestern
Iran, northern Iraq, and northern Syria and they are disliked and persecuted in all four of those countries.

And still trying to become their own country...

colder where you are.... last night it got to -4C here, and
it's considered a cold snap, especially for this time of
year... We rarely get much below 0F (that's about what you've
got now?) even in the coldest part of the winter.

We just went through a cold spell where we hit -25 C (-13 F) which
is colder than normal but by no means a record.

I spent the weekend formatting newly downloaded recipes. Here's the
    first one ...

Somebody, probably Michael, had mentioned pea shoot dumplings and
when I went to look for a recipe I came across all sorts of
variations from all sorts of countries:

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

Title: Good Old Southern Peas And Dumplin's
    Categories: Southern, Dumplings
    Yield: 4 servings

    2 x 15 ounce cans peas, drained
(you may also use frozen or
    Fresh)
    1 qt Milk
    2 oz Butter
1 ts Chicken soup base or
    1 Bullion cube
    1/2 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Pepper
    DUMPLINGS:
    2 c Self-rising flour
    1/4 c Shortening or lard
    3/4 To 1 cup milk

Place peas, milk, butter, chicken soup base, salt and pepper in a
dutch oven. Bring to a boil. Drop dumplings into the peas. Reduce
heat to low, cover and simmer for about 20 min or until dumplings
are done. You may want to thicken with just a little corn starch.

DUMPLINGS: Place flour in a large bowl. Cut in shortening in usual
pastry method. Add milk and mix until moistened. Turn dough out onto
a floured board and knead a few times. Roll out dough to about 1/4"
thickness. Using a pizza wheel, cut into 2X2 inch squares. Drop
squares into broth, cover and simmer on low about 20 minutes or
    until done.

... Lumpy gravy? Just think of them as very small dumplings.

There is that, as well... :)

I don't even avoid fat... I somewhat avoid certain greases when mixed
with too much sugar, as that tends to set off my reflux... but Dale was referring to my eating straight fat cap off his pastrami at the picnic,
and similar sorts of occasions... The fat just isn't a problem for me,
    even without the gallbladder...

You definitely are colder than we are... Even in the dead of winter, the
house hasn't dropped below 55 F overnight when the furnace is off...
When we lost power for almost a week a few winters ago, the house did
drop to about 50 before we got the power back... we were starting to
think about maybe needing to find an alternative place to stay for us
and the cats, and then came home from supper out (couldn't cook in the
house) to find the power guys in our driveway, working on the
wires/poles behind our house.... we had power back within an hour or so
    of that...
