When Richard was working at Kodak, he had to (was expected to, and strongly encouraged to, not absolutely forced to, but close) donate to
the United Way fund through work... He could designate one charity from under that umbrella for it to go to, and I think usually did choose one
of the causes that we felt comfortable with...

My first dutystation in the Navy was oddly at an Air Force base. As a
wet behind the ears E3 (came in as one due to college) with maybe 2
weeks past bootcamp graduation, the USAF GS handed me a form prefilled
out with 'my fair share' and told me to fill in my SSN and sign it.
It was 100$ a month and after taxes, my pay then was about 700$ and I
was paying off college loans. After that (had i signed it) - student loans, I was on something like 500$ a month take home. Rent was 350$. Utilities were 75$ average.
It got fixed (I later redid the form and was happy to pick the
charities I wanted and donate 5$ a month total which was very
reasonable for my income at the time).

That was rather high-handed....

And that puts it into a worse perspective.... wouldn't you think he'd've had a clue....? ;/

Yup. I think they got in a lot of trouble for it too later.
