Quoting Ruth Haffly to Michael Loo <=-

canned tomatoes as a supper time "vegetable" weren't so great.

    My mom's stewed tomato recipe:
get a quart jar of home canned tomatoes. Heat
contents of said jar to boiling.

They just needed a little seasoning. My mom's method was to gently
fry celery and onion in a little butter, then add the tomatoes and
season them generously with lots of salt and pepper. I enjoyed them
as a youth. Today I would also add one or more of the Italian
    herbs.

    Cheers

    Jim

    Hi Jim,

They probably had some of my mom's idea of seasoning--add salt. Not lots
but definatly some, but nothing else. One way I've enjoyed them (bought
them canned) is with okra and corn, a very Southern way to fix them.
I've not tried making them that way as Steve doesn't like okra and is
allergic to corn, hence the every once in a while can falls into my
    grocery buggy. (G)
