Mornin Y'all.. Got a new forum going. Who want's to post about Fidonet?

So I admit I'm more interested in the conference than in
    the net as a whole.

"What are your fondest memories from the Fidonet network?"

They're all here in this echo and on this board.

    https://phpbb.docsplace.org/viewforum.php?f=11
I can create conferences as needed, Cooking etc :)

An interesting idea; we might want to look into that
if FIDO goes paws up altogether.

    ---------- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.00

Title: Angel Hair Pasta with Shrimp
    Categories: Pasta, Main dish, Fish
    Yield: 4 servings

    1 1/2 tb Butter 1 1/2 tb Flour
    1 1/2 c Milk 1/2 c 35 per cent cream
1 1/2 tb Pesto sauce 1 1/2 tb Chopped parsley
1 tb Minced garlic 2 tb Grated paresan cheese
1/2 ts Salt 1/2 ts White pepper
1 x Worcestershire and tabasco 2/3 lb Capellini
1/2 ea Red pepper, cut in strips 1/4 lb Snow peas, trimmed
    1 lb Jumbo shrimp

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt butter, stir in flour and cook for a
few minutes until golden. Add milk and cream, bring to a gentle simmer
    and
continue to stir until thickened. Add pesto, parsley, garlic, parmesan,
salt, pepper, worcestershire and tabasco, and stir until blended. Reduce
heat and keep warm, stirring occasionally. Cook pasta quickly in a large
pot of boiling water (3 to 4 minutes, or until al dente). At the same
    time,
poach the pepper, snowpeas and shrimp in another pot of boiling water ( 2
or 3 minutes, or until just heated through). Drain the pasta, mix it with
the sauce and portion it into heated individual serving bowls. Garnish
    each
portion with shrimp and vegetables, and serve immediately.

But as long as you keep DOC's open and a major source of the users in
this COOKING echo -- we will be OK. Thanks for your service.

This recipe is an interesting idea, but most of us would ignor the
"diet-lean" comment. Some would also ignore the cilantro. But the idea
of putting stuff inside of a pair of 2 ounce patties can be a good one,
    abeit not really new.

Since the net is evolving and this old hardware that's insecure (http) I thought this forum might be easier to access with modern web browsers and support full https encryption. Just a thought as i set it up for politics mainly, bet set up a Fidonet conference with a single forum for now.

One day it's just going to quit working as hardware gets more sophicated and the web moves toward only ssl / tls encryption. I'm having a hard time keeping it up as it is. Never hurts to have an up to date replacement handy.. Just in case!

I have never bothered worrying about encryption for a BBS. There's nothing that private or a need for security. If it's that bad, I'll fire up my Linux-based BBS where you can use 256-bit AES encryption to connect but meh, when it comes to that, I'll have better things to do. Besides, using the Internet, you have no privacy anyway, TTTT. After 35 years in IT, I just don't
care if someone wants to spy on my ranting on something in Fidonet, heh. :D

Most of my callers use the web interface. The net is quickly moving toward web browsers not accepting un-encryped urls. Google is planning on blocking insecure urls in chrome browser. Just a FYI that nobody is concerned about.

All of my websites are encrypted and you can already connect to my BBS via
my website using https at https://outpostbbs.net/connect.html -- I've got
that covered. Oddly enough I get few callers that use the web interface as
I get mostly old-school callers via telnet and, when I had it, POTS (surprisingly a LOT of local calls via POTS but $50+ a month for a
lightly-used phone line was hard to justify).

As for Google, they can do what they want. I don't use their spyware unless there's a pressing reason for it. I also don't do Windows unless there's a real reason for it also and when I do, I make sure that Windows is isolated
so it can't start calling home to report on me. :D

Anyhow, I'll stop being OT in here. At least there's still a BBS or two to
    get on and enjoy.

you could use stunnel or similar and set up a TLS proxy... when they connect to
your http redirect them to https on the TLS proxy which then talks TLS between
the user and your system but talks regular http to your server... it is an easy way to add https to http-only servers...

stunnel can be used to provide TLS connections to other servers as well... with
that in mind, you can have secure smtp, news, ftp and even irc if desired...
