They must think there's a heavy concentration of Germans in the area. Seriously, it's most likely because of the presence of some top rated schools (Duke, UNC, NC State) as well as a good number of lesser ones
plus the Research Triangle. That's as good a guess as any as to why
we're getting all the stores.

I'm just as likely to believe the concentration of Germans
theory. Or a dearth of discount food outlets, but still why
Aldi Nord and Sud would violate a long-standing truce is a
mystery. Lidl and one of the Aldis I could understand.

That is an interesting thought.... Here in Rochester, we've had Aldi
(multiple locations) for quite a while, over a decade at least, probably more... but only in the last few years, we also acquired a Trader Joe's
(at least one location, maybe another one or two)... Perhaps the Aldi
Nord and Aldi Sud decided that they might as well overlap territories
after all....? So far we don't have any Lidl here, so far as I know...
