Interesting - your area seems to be a battlefield among the
three German discount supermarkets, and with the opening of
Wegmans, life is going to be even more interesting, though
They must think there's a heavy concentration of Germans in the area. Seriously, it's most likely because of the presence of some top rated
schools (Duke, UNC, NC State) as well as a good number of lesser ones
plus the Research Triangle. That's as good a guess as any as to why
    we're getting all the stores.

I'm just as likely to believe the concentration of Germans
theory. Or a dearth of discount food outlets, but still why
Aldi Nord and Sud would violate a long-standing truce is a
mystery. Lidl and one of the Aldis I could understand.

good for you. Trader Joe's and Aldi are subsidiaries of Aldi
Nord and Aldi Sud respectively, long-term family frenemies,
with Lidl the main competitor in the discount grocery niche
in Europe. We shall see what we shall see.
We'll see what the lasting power is of the various ones. I think
Wegman's is going to put a major hurt on some of the lesser stores, and somewhat less, but still an impact, on the others.

Weggie's competes on quality more than on price, its
    protestations to the contrary notwithstanding.

T'would be impossible to have all memories happy, or unhappy. Life
just > gives us a mix, like it or not.
Sad to relate, for a substantial number of people, the
unhappy ones predominate, either through their bad luck
or their bad attitude or an incapacity to cope. I've known
some who have suffered from that condition; a few have
    died from it.
Not good for them or your friendships but some people just don't want
help, can't accept it or otherwise can't cope.

Yes, but when they age themselves off deliberately,
    that's distressing.

I've been exposed to Hep A.
But not contracted it. We've been out of Europe long enough that any
chance of getting mad cow are long past--can't convince the Red Cross of
that tho. If we (all who were in Europe in the danger time) could/would donate, they wouldn't have many shortages.

    Doesn't matter - I have the antibodies.

Smart idea--you could grow your own veggies, graze small animals,
etc > all within city limits. (G)
Some of our cities have successfully instituted victory
gardens, community gardens, and the like.
Success in small areas but not much of an impact over the larger part of
    the city. Not yet, anyway.

I figure the necessity will turn the former realm of the
tree-huggers into a more general practice.

A parlor trick of mine in my childhood (well, 20s) was to weigh
things by hand in the 50 to 80 gram range (mostly violin and
viola bows, but food as well) within a gram. Now my discrimination
is probably more like within an ounce.
I'm not sure how fine a weight discriminaation I have; mine is more of a color one.

My color discrimination is decent, but other visual things, ptui.

    Mexican-style pepper steak
    categories: Texan, beef, main
    servings: 4

2 Tb extra virgin olive oil
1 md onion, halved and sliced
2 md Roma tomatoes, coarsely chopped
1 md red bell pepper, julienne
    4 jalapeno or habanero chiles
    - sliced crosswise with seeds
    Kosher salt and black pepper
    1 c unsalted chicken broth
    8 fresh bay leaves
    1 lb shaved beefsteak
    2 Tb chopped cilantro

    1. In each of two large skillets, heat 1 Tb olive
oil over med-high heat and add half of the onion,
tomatoes, bell pepper and chilies, season with salt
and pepper, and cook, stirring, until slightly
    softened, about 2 min.

    2. Add half of the broth and bay leaves to each
skillet and bring to a simmer. Lay beef slices
over top, season with salt and pepper and cook,
turning beef once, until it loses its pink color,
about 3 min total. Transfer meat to a platter or
plates. Simmer pan juices until slightly thickened,
1 to 2 min. Spoon vegetables and juices over the
    beef and sprinkle with cilantro.

I'm just as likely to believe the concentration of Germans
theory. Or a dearth of discount food outlets, but still why

It's just a wild guess, based on the fact that we have Lidl (Wf got
the first one of those in the state), TJ's and Aldi. BTW, speaking of concentrations--read somewhere that somebody said Cary stood for
Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees. I believe the town was in
exsistance long before it was discovered by Yankees.

Aldi Nord and Sud would violate a long-standing truce is a
mystery. Lidl and one of the Aldis I could understand.

Just to add more confusion to people I guess. (G)

Wegman's quality, especially in house brands, is much higher than house
brands of some of the other stores in the area.

Yes, but when they age themselves off deliberately,
    that's distressing.

True, but if help is rejected, there's not a lot of options open for the
friend to take to be a help. Sometimes just friendship is the best you
can offer--and hope it will help.

AFAIK, I've not been exposed to any of the Heps--nothing has ever come
back in blood work to indicate the possibility.

It may--if they don't cut the trees down to make more gardening room.

    Not surprising.

I know the cilantro is basically a garnish, but I'd leave it out
entirely. Maybe sub in some other peppers, depending on what I had on
    hand.
