Mines come to mind as well, but they're even noisier.

You mean, to use on them...? SOW, the last day I was up at the Pond
this last trip, we heard some very loud booms... RJ was speculating
that someone might be doing some mining in the area...

Explosives used in mining tend to be set off underground and are more
felt as earthquake-like vibrations than as a "boom". Even in a shallow mine or an open-pit strip mine the explosions will be somewhat muffled
by being in a bore hole or otherwise away from the open air.

That may be... more likely, it could have been with some sort of road construction in the area... It's a quiet part of the country, and
noise does travel well... and stand out....

I'm trying to picture road construction explosives use that would NOT
be pretty muffled and am coming up blank. Possibly (and this is a stretch) Farmer Fred clearing some acres for tilling and dynamiting stumps. We
used to do this on my family's farm - unless there was major acreage it
was less expensive than hiring a bulldozer and operator. And a lot more interesting to a pre-teen boy. Bv)=

I'd be more likely to think it was someone celebrating with aerial fireworks - some "aerial bombs" have the explosive force of a half
stick of 60% dynamite .... which will get your attention even a half
mile or more away from "ground zero".

That may be... but it isn't really the time of year for that sort of thing, especially up in the North Country.... Around the 4th of July,
it could have been possible, though....

I have a clown in my area (not a near neighbour - but not far enough
away) who sets off aerial bombs at the slightest excuse - or none at
all. I suspect that alcohol may be involved in some of those instances.
S/he's interrupted several otherwise peaceful evenings/sound sleeps.
Good thing I don't know where this person lives as I have a source of
supply for M-80 and Cherry Bomb fireworks .... coupled with a sneaky imagination and a desire for "paybacks". So, I've deliberately not made
the effort to track down the idiot. Safer for my record of not being
    hassled by the nabs (lately).

    Title: Cherry Bombe
    Categories: Desserts, Dairy, Fruits, Citrus
    Yield: 12 servings

    MMMMM-----------------------FIRST LAYER------------------------------
1 c Pareve or dairy milk
    8 Egg yolks
    1 c Sugar

    MMMMM-----------------------SECOND LAYER-----------------------------
500 ml (1 pint) whipping cream
    - (pareve or dairy)
1/2 lb (250 grams) fresh or frozen
    - cherries; pureed
    1 tb Lemon juice

Beat the egg yolks with the sugar until the mixture is
    light and fluffy.

Heat the milk in a pot until just before it boils.

Remove the pot from the fire and slowly add half the
milk to the egg mixture, mixing constantly.

Return the entire egg mixture to the pot and cook over
a low flame, stirring constantly, until the mixture
    thickens.

Remove from the fire and cool.

NOTE: You can freeze this in silicon shapes (not
complicated ones) so that each serving slips out ready
    to serve.

SECOND LAYER: Beat the whipping cream until it is firm
    and soft.

Mix in the ground cherries and lemon and fold the
mixture into the cooled Crème Anglaise.

Pour into the loaf pans and freeze.

Remove from the freezer and slice with a knife dipped in
boiling water. Wait five minutes before serving. Serve
    with fresh fruit.

I can imagine... :) Brings to mind another wonder... there are a number
of newly arrived Amish farmers in the area,,, they might be inclined to
use dynamite, as they'd not be using a bulldozer...

True, that sort of payback could well land you in hot water instead of
    the original offender.... ;)

Next time I see the kid, I'll have to ask him if he happened to find out
what those booms actually were... I'll be going back up there in a
little more than a week... (Currently at the Picnic in Wake Forest at Haffly's...)
