    apples are coming in ...
Wonder if Empire apples are available yet

    I haven't seen any Empires

They are a late season apple; they'll probably be in the markets in
another week or so until mid October.

Another late season apple that I used to really like is Wolf River
which is kind of uncommon these days, at least commercially. My
neighbour where I grew up had a row of them along their driveway
leading to their farmhouse. The apples are red with yellow
streaking, quite sweet and amazingly large. Each single fruit is
over a pound. They're a good cooking apple that keeps it shape.
One reason they're not popular anymore is that most people can't eat
a whole one in a single sitting and the fruit is so heavy that tree
branches are prone to breakage in a wind.

Sounds about right... I mostly just haven't been paying attention...
now that I'm allergic to them, apple season is too much of a downer for
me... I'd have to make a special effort to look, probably for someone
else's curiosity to be satisfied.... ;)

That could discourage people from buying, and then from growing, them...
Dunno if they were around here... it's quite possible, though, as this
really is apple growing territory, along the shores of Lake Ontario...

Same on our side of the lake. Ontario is Canada's largest producer
of apples and B.C. second. For similar climate reasons New York,
Michigan and Washington are also big producers.

This recipe is not for you, but you could use perry and pear slices
instead. Zubrowka is buffalo grass (that's sweet grass) infused
    vodka.

    Title: Zubrowka & Cider
    Categories: alcohol, beverages
    Serving: 1

    1 1/2 oz ZU
    ice
    4 oz hard cider
    GARNISH:
    Apple slices

ZU plus apple juice is the classic way to drink bison-grass vodka,
the way folks have for centuries. We promise you, it tastes exactly,
almost uncannily, like apple pie. Here, we swap the juice out for
hard cider, which lends complexity, a little sparkle and a little
    more booze.

Instructions: Add 1 1/2 ounces ZU to a tall glass with ice, and top
with about 4 ounces of hard cider. Apple slices make a logical (and good-looking) garnish.

Perry being a sort of pear cider, then...? I don't think I've seen it
    around here at all...
