Rather, especially the cart. There are work arounds to the paper
bags but they are very handy for other things too.

Indeed. :) We mostly use the reuseable bags now for grocery shopping,
but our stockpile of paper ones does get good use, too... :) There's
been legislation here in NYS to ban the plastic bags, I don't think
it's gone into effect yet, though... not a total ban, but supposedly
charging the consumers for using them instead... we rarely get those...

I have a largish stockpile of "canvas" shopping bags.

Before Wegmans came out with the "canvas" reusable bags (actually made
of recycled plastic), we'd bring back our previously used double-bagged paper bags, and use them for our groceries... when they finally wore
out too much for groceries, they'd be used for disposing of
recyclables, including newspaper... We now have a reusable bag filled mostly with reusables, but also some paper bags, from before... the
latter are still useful to line the "child" seat of the grocery cart,
to keep small stuff from falling through the cracks.... :)

My first reusables were from ALDI. Being too ch^h^h frugal to buy plastic
bags and not finding a usable cardboard box I'd pay the $1 for the pale
green bag. I've about six of them. I've also got bags with various other
logos on them from various sources/promotions. The only real canvas bag
is a smallish tote from Saveur magazine that I got for subscribing. The
    bag has outlasted the subscription.

My local Hy-Vee gives a 5c credit off your bill if you use "canvas"
(or boxes). ALDI and Ruler Foods charge for plastic bags.

So far no discounts or surcharges for any sort of bags, etc, at
Wegmans... But we do get 25c off the bill at Lori's when we bring our
own bag for our items, which we always do.... :)

Food Fantasies my local natural/organic/health food/supplement store
doesn't give me money off or a rebate for not taking a bag from them
for my purchases. They take a quarter from the till and drop it into
the collection can for their non-profit/charity of the month.

There is a move afoot to charge
for plastic bags. I've signed a petition here and there. I suspect
they will get as far as the Term Limits petitions I've signed in past.

I've not signed any petitions of the sort... but I did hear that it
had passed our state legislature... just don't remember when it was supposed to be taking effect, and haven't yet seen any instance of
the plastic being charged for yet...

Signing petitions is like peeing your pants in a dark suit. Gives you a temporary warm feeling - but nobody notices.

Our first reusables were free from Wegmans (they were handing out
coupons for the full price of them, 99c) to get people buying them at
the beginning... they were also selling proper canvas tote bags for a
lot more money... so I guess they were trying to spearhead the reusable movement in the area... :)

    I've also got bags with
various other logos on them from various sources/promotions. The only
real canvas bag is a smallish tote from Saveur magazine that I got for subscribing. The bag has outlasted the subscription.

We've got some from other sources now, too... I have a variety of canvas
totes, but they've not been used for food, just for toting other
stuff... :) I'm not surprised the bag outlasted the subscription... :)

I suppose that's another way to handle things... :) Especially if one
endorses the non-profit of the month....

Which is partly why I don't bother...
