Rather, especially the cart. There are work arounds to the paper bags
but they are very handy for other things too.
Indeed. :) We mostly use the reuseable bags now for grocery shopping,
but our stockpile of paper ones does get good use, too... :) There's
been legislation here in NYS to ban the plastic bags, I don't think
it's gone into effect yet, though... not a total ban, but supposedly
charging the consumers for using them instead... we rarely get those...

I have a largish stockpile of "canvas" shopping bags.

Before Wegmans came out with the "canvas" reusable bags (actually made
of recycled plastic), we'd bring back our previously used double-bagged
paper bags, and use them for our groceries... when they finally wore out
too much for groceries, they'd be used for disposing of recyclables,
including newspaper... We now have a reusable bag filled mostly with
reusables, but also some paper bags, from before... the latter are still
useful to line the "child" seat of the grocery cart, to keep small stuff
from falling through the cracks.... :)

My local Hy-Vee gives a 5c credit off your bill if you use "canvas"
(or boxes). ALDI and Ruler Foods charge for plastic bags.

So far no discounts or surcharges for any sort of bags, etc, at
Wegmans... But we do get 25c off the bill at Lori's when we bring our
own bag for our items, which we always do.... :)

There is a move afoot to charge
for plastic bags. I've signed a petition here and there. I suspect
they will get as far as the Term Limits petitions I've signed in past.

I've not signed any petitions of the sort... but I did hear that it had
passed our state legislature... just don't remember when it was supposed
to be taking effect, and haven't yet seen any instance of the plastic
    being charged for yet...

I have not seen a paper bag for a very long time. It is possible that
some stores have them under the counter in case a customer asks for
them, but I'm not even sure of that anymore. We have a number of
reusable bags that live in the back of my CRV. About the only time we
use them is when we go to ALDI or BJs or Costco -- none of which offer
bags of any type. We do get the normal grocery store plastic bags. Our recycling service no longer will take them, but the grocery stores will
take them so Gail saves them up and takes a bunch at a time to turn in.

I am not aware if any store around here offers a discount for reusable
bags. I have heard rumblings that some local juristictions are planning
to either forbid them altogether or to make stores charge you for them.
If that happens, we will just have to remember to take our reusables
    into the store with us.

The ALDI I shop at offers paper bags, plastic bags, and reusable bags right at the register. I was there yesterday. Paper bags are 9 cents a piece. Their plastic and paper bags are both rather thick so if you were careful with them you could easily reuse them several times.

I keep a small freezer bag and two reusable bags (a large one from ALDI and a small one from Walmart) in the back of my van. They work well for 90% of my shopping needs since it's just me.

Before Wegmans came out with the "canvas" reusable bags (actually
made of recycled plastic), we'd bring back our previously used
double-bagged paper bags, and use them for our groceries... when they
finally wore out too much for groceries, they'd be used for disposing
of recyclables, including newspaper... We now have a reusable bag
filled mostly with reusables, but also some paper bags, from before...
the latter are still useful to line the "child" seat of the grocery
cart, to keep small stuff from falling through the cracks.... :)

I have not seen a paper bag for a very long time. It is possible that some stores have them under the counter in case a customer asks for
them, but I'm not even sure of that anymore.

Wegmans still has paper bags under the counter, available for the
asking... at least around here.... They have the plastic bags set up in
those stands at the end of the belt, which would usually be used unless
one hands over their reusables (or ask to have things passed back so
that they can bag on their own, as we do)... and also have a stand of
reusables at the backend of the checkout, available for sale... :) And
have large signs as one enters and elsewhere at the front of the store reminding customers to bring and use their reusables.... :)

We have a number of reusable bags that live in the back of my CRV.
About the only time we use them is when we go to ALDI or BJs or Costco
-- none of which offer bags of any type.

We have a bagful of reusables that live in the kitchen and are grabbed
when we leave to go shopping... since we usually try to do the BJs
shopping the same trip, we'll use one or more of them there... If we
were to shop ALDI or Costco, we'd probably grab them for there, too...

We do get the normal grocery store plastic bags. Our recycling
service no longer will take them, but the grocery stores will take
them so Gail saves them up and takes a bunch at a time to turn in.

We get them mostly with our prescriptions... they get reused around the
house for various things, including gathering together stuff to bring up
or down the stairs... Every so often we have enough to take to the store
for recycling, too... For a while, Wegmans would offer to exchange a
reusable bag for a full bag of returned plastic bags on Earth Day... I
didn't notice them doing it this year... maybe I just missed it...

I am not aware if any store around here offers a discount for reusable bags.

The only discounts I know of are for bringing your own bag (and that can
be paper, plastic, nylon, canvas, reusable, etc)... I keep a green nylon
foldup bag in my car in the console, just for the purpose... Shopping at Lori's, which does offer that discount, might happen at any time, so I'm
    always prepared... ;)

I have heard rumblings that some local juristictions are
planning to either forbid them altogether or to make stores charge you
for them. If that happens, we will just have to remember to take our reusables into the store with us.

I think that is part of the idea behind the proposed/in process
regulations... to get people to be more likely to reuse more durable
bags... I can't see that I'm all that upset by the prospect, as I do
get annoyed at seeing those flimsy plastic bags caught way up in the top branches of trees, whence they've been blown by the wind after becoming litter....
