Rather, especially the cart. There are work arounds to the paper bags
but they are very handy for other things too.
Indeed. :) We mostly use the reuseable bags now for grocery shopping,
but our stockpile of paper ones does get good use, too... :) There's
been legislation here in NYS to ban the plastic bags, I don't think
it's gone into effect yet, though... not a total ban, but supposedly
charging the consumers for using them instead... we rarely get those...
I have a largish stockpile of "canvas" shopping bags.
My local Hy-Vee gives a 5c credit off your bill if you use "canvas"
(or boxes). ALDI and Ruler Foods charge for plastic bags.
There is a move afoot to charge
for plastic bags. I've signed a petition here and there. I suspect
they will get as far as the Term Limits petitions I've signed in past.

Before Wegmans came out with the "canvas" reusable bags (actually made
of recycled plastic), we'd bring back our previously used
double-bagged paper bags, and use them for our groceries... when they finally wore out too much for groceries, they'd be used for disposing
of recyclables, including newspaper... We now have a reusable bag
filled mostly with reusables, but also some paper bags, from before...
the latter are still useful to line the "child" seat of the grocery
cart, to keep small stuff from falling through the cracks.... :)
reusable bags that live in the back of my CRV. About the only time we
use them is when we go to ALDI or BJs or Costco -- none of which offer bags of any type. We do get the normal grocery store plastic bags.

I have not seen a paper bag for a very long time. It is possible that some stores have them under the counter in case a customer asks for
them, but I'm not even sure of that anymore.

We do get the normal grocery store plastic bags. Our recycling
service no longer will take them, but the grocery stores will take
them so Gail saves them up and takes a bunch at a time to turn in.
I am not aware if any store around here offers a discount for reusable bags.
I have heard rumblings that some local juristictions are
planning to either forbid them altogether or to make stores charge you
for them. If that happens, we will just have to remember to take our reusables into the store with us.

I think that is part of the idea behind the proposed/in process regulations... to get people to be more likely to reuse more durable bags... I can't see that I'm all that upset by the prospect, as I do
get annoyed at seeing those flimsy plastic bags caught way up in the
top branches of trees, whence they've been blown by the wind after becoming litter....

Which is not quite as bad as seeing them wrapped around the snout of
some marine animal, e.g. green turtle or dolphin.
