But it turns out that Letitia was laden with so many
goodies from family and well-wishers that she'll
probably have to check two bags, whose fare will be
higher than the value of the gifts. Ah, well, she's
going back on the 5th, and I'm going back on the 9th,
    and I'm not responsible.
    You tried, anyway... ;)

    It worked halfway.

We're traveling on an airline that would allow us to take
something like 340 lb of hold luggage for free.
But just because it's allowed doesn't make it a good idea... unless one has a retinue of valets to carry it all for one... ;)
I'm not sure I have 340 lb of clothes. Maybe the
music library. I read "revue of violets."
I certainly wouldn't have that much to bring with... ;) And the violets
    do sound quite pretty.... ;)

Could have been better - revue of violas.

That was a dystopic suggestion by one of the science fiction
writers, and it's been proven possible. But think about this -
there's the possibility that even if wi-fi is turned off,
that doesn't mean that it's really off. And just because a
computer is turned off, that doesn't mean that it's really off.
Ah, but if there is no wi-fi, that can't be accessed... ;) I have heard
that a TV that's turned off, but has 'instant-on' isn't really off... as
to the computer, that might be more likely with a Windows OS than with,
    say, DOS....

    Ah, but if there's no wi-fi, there's wi-fi.

But the main job of collections librarians is to
protect the collections. Very different from
    circulation librarians and research librarians.
I'd be more more like the last kind.
As long as the collections librarian is satisfied one won't do damage to
the collection, it would tend to be more like a research librarian, I'd think.... Protective, yes, but like it to be appreciated, too... :)

In all preservational endeavors, from museums to
libraries to public buildings, there's a balance. The
professionals run through all parts of the spectrum
depending on their personalities and the stakeholders
they report to. I'm sure your niece knows all about
the issues; not sure where she'd fall on the scale.

Speaking of which, I'll be bringing some fresh-pressed, home-grown, organic grown olive oil to the Picnic... RJ brought me a large container from Turkey, from his niece/nephew(in-law)'s olive farm there... It's
way more than I'd easily use, but he doesn't mind my sharing the
wealth... ;) He got a few (from this year's crop) to give as gifts
back here in the States... He says it's best for dipping bread in...
None for me, thanks, because I've had Turkish oil
    plenty of times.
RJ claims this is far superior to anything else.... ;)

It's odd he's taking the position of one party, especially
that one. I like the Portuguese oils but have had good ones
from all over the place, from North Africa to California.
Even Australia makes some good ones.

    MM's Mussels
    categories: main, starter, shellfish
serves:2 as main, 4 as entree)

    4 lg cloves garlic
    2 Tb EVOO
    1 pt cn tomatoes, drained
    chile peppers, chopped
    parsley
    1 kg mussels
    4 sl crusty bread

Gently fry several big cloves of finely chopped garlic
in a couple of Tb good olive oil. Chop and toss in a
tin of tomatoes (but not the juice), fresh chilli to
taste and good handful of fresh parsley. Cover tightly
and simmer on very low heat for 15 min, add scrubbed
mussels, cover and steam 5 to 10 min or until open.
Cut a thick piece of crusty Italian bread for each
plate, put mussels on top and pour sauce over. Eat
shellfish then bread, with good red wine.

Mussels are also suitable to microwave - they don't
explode or toughen and a rule of thumb is 3 to 4 min
on high for half a kilo. They're done when they open.

Not for a dinosaur of a computer that's never had and isn't capable of
    using wi-fi....

Dunno where she'd fall either... but pretty much her experience has been
with research libraries (medical)... and before that, with circulation..

I suspect that it's because he's related to them by 'marriage'...
sounded just a bit chauvinist to me... ;)

And he probably hasn't had quite the range of experience that you've
had, even though he considers himself well-traveled... :)
