We're traveling on an airline that would allow us to take
something like 340 lb of hold luggage for free.

But just because it's allowed doesn't make it a good idea... unless one
has a retinue of valets to carry it all for one... ;)

I'm not sure I have 340 lb of clothes. Maybe the
music library. I read "revue of violets."

I certainly wouldn't have that much to bring with... ;) And the violets
do sound quite pretty.... ;)

This one, about which I haven't heard yet, would take me to

It's happening fairly frequently. I try to remember
to put airplane mode on when I'm not actively using
the Internet, but I forget all too frequently.

Would that protect you better from outside influences on the
computer...?

No ... what it would do is discourage evildoers from
appropriating my downtime and highjacking my resources
to make a sort of mini-me bot. There is no way to prevent
outside snooping and influences on any computer. Even
having wi-fi off altogether doesn't guarantee isolation.
It is possible (one of the great paranoid sci-fi writers,
perhaps Lucius Shepherd, wrote about this) with enough
effort and technology and will to surveil anyone with a
computer at all.

How...? Through the electrical lines...?

That was a dystopic suggestion by one of the science fiction
writers, and it's been proven possible. But think about this -
there's the possibility that even if wi-fi is turned off,
that doesn't mean that it's really off. And just because a
computer is turned off, that doesn't mean that it's really off.

Ah, but if there is no wi-fi, that can't be accessed... ;) I have heard
that a TV that's turned off, but has 'instant-on' isn't really off... as
to the computer, that might be more likely with a Windows OS than with,
say, DOS....

Perhaps not, but I have run into it from time to time in my
genealogical travels.... :)

If you describe your mission enticingly enough, no
doubt doors will be opened. Despite their strict
reputation, librarians tend to be soft touches.

After all, one of their prime functions is to help people obtain information.... :)

But the main job of collections librarians is to
protect the collections. Very different from
circulation librarians and research librarians.
I'd be more more like the last kind.

As long as the collections librarian is satisfied one won't do damage to
the collection, it would tend to be more like a research librarian, I'd think.... Protective, yes, but like it to be appreciated, too... :)

Many of friends keep getting Flip Flop Berio despite
my warnings.

Speaking of which, I'll be bringing some fresh-pressed, home-grown,
organic grown olive oil to the Picnic... RJ brought me a large container from Turkey, from his niece/nephew(in-law)'s olive farm there... It's
way more than I'd easily use, but he doesn't mind my sharing the
wealth... ;) He got a few (from this year's crop) to give as gifts
back here in the States... He says it's best for dipping bread in...

None for me, thanks, because I've had Turkish oil
plenty of times.

RJ claims this is far superior to anything else.... ;)
