Does that imply they're a domestic product?
    Yeah, no, sure, maybe.
I'd have hoped for some forthcomingness in the
    game of origins.
More and more items are displaying their country of origin, if not
by the producer then by the retailer but No Name Noodles isn't one
    of them.

So ... the question is what the least desirable country
of origin would be. I vote for China. You send over wheat,
    you get back no-name noodles.

I suspect corn oil is safe too.
I'd have thought so, as it is pretty purified. On the
other hand, it has a distinct corny aroma, which leads
one to suspect some kind of impurities.
It sure does have a corny aroma. I have been using canola oil for
years which I tend to think of as neutral tasting but bought a
bottle of corn oil recently. I was surprised at just how corny the
    bouquet was.

So that makes me suspicious on behalf of the allergics.

I imagine that Americans who use corn oil every day think it's
the neutral one and that canola is the one with the distinctive nose!

No, because canola is ultra-refined even after the oil
seed rape being bred to neutrality as close as is possible.
If it were not, there would be toxic levels of erucic acid.

There's a substantial amount of dietary looniness out there ... restrictions against gluten, corn, dairy, pork, soy,
tuna and swordfish / dictated by some kind of spiritual
    advisor.
I am reminded of a fad following high school friend who sent me a
picture of himself in the 70s looking completely emaciated. In the accompanying letter he stated, "I am at the final level of the
macrobiotic diet, just brown rice and filtered water. You should try
it. I have never felt so alive. This picture was taken just a week
before I ended up in the hospital."

So was he bizarrely innocent, or did he have a deliciously
    ironic sense of humor?

vigorous efforts of the dairy industry to attribute lactose
    intolerance to neurosis.
Most government lobbying groups are completely immoral. Thinking
back on my post about zoning I exempt myself!

    Heh.

I had mentioned the heat wave and prolonged drought in India
affecting the cardamom and predicted a price spike. Well I went to

It's news that we are not getting much of here, but the cities
of India are getting desperately short of water. I used to
think that desalination was the way to go and envisioned vast
gleaming new cities built out of blocks of salt. Now I have
no idea what could be done.

the supermarket shortly thereafter to pick up a packet of the
relatively cheapish Suraj brand only to find out the shelf was bare
although every other Suraj spice was available. Three days later a
new shipment came in at the same old price (obviously the stuff is
a year old). South Asian and Somali housewives were grabbing them 3
at a time as there has been an article about the shortage on CBC
North that week. I barely got there in time to get a single package.

I'm figuring that those housewives have their finger on
    the pulses of commerce anyway.

As soon as I got home I used a teaspoonful in a loaf of 75% whole
wheat bread and was happy to find the the air tight plastic package
had kept it nicely aromatic despite its age. The store has remained
    out of stock ever since.

It's been a relatively costly spice for years but now
is hors de prix. I'm sure that'll obtain for a while,
and if it ever returns to a normal figure, it'll be
    a higher normal figure.

I also note that vanilla extract is finally getting back to almost
    normal prices.

    A;most being the operative word.

Why should anyone want one's name to live forever. The
prospect of one's body living forever is bad enough.

    categories: booze, scatological, wwtt, Ikwtwt
    servings: 1

    1 1/2 oz overproof rum
    1 1/2 oz cherry-flavored vodka
    5 oz Coke

Fill a large glass about half full with ice, add one shot
of rum (I use 151 myself), one shot of cherry vodka and
then fill the glass with coke. You can adjust the amount
of rum and vodka to suit your tastes.

My guess would be China too.

But the issue seems to be with proteins, not aromatic oils.

I'm really not sure. That guy has sampled every wacky religious
cult, fad diet and alternative medicine scam in an endless pursuit of
some undefinable state of enlightenment or self-actualization. Even
today he is still doing that; the last time I spoke to him he was
going on about how his latest spiritual Master was helping him get
in alignment with the universe's harmonics (for a fee of course.)

drought in India affecting the cardamom

It's news that we are not getting much of here, but the cities
of India are getting desperately short of water.

It's well documented in the media I choose to read. The cardamom
issue was just a small side bar.

South Asian and Somali housewives were grabbing them 3
    at a time

I'm figuring that those housewives have their finger on
    the pulses of commerce anyway.

And recent immigrants follow the news from back home closely.

Title: Bariis Iskukaris - Spiced Somali Rice
    Categories: African, Rice, Spices, Lamb
    Servings: 4

    2 c basmati rice
    2 tomatoes (chopped)
    1 onion (chopped)
    1 cinnamon stick
    5 whole cloves
    4 whole cardamom pods
    1 ts cumin seeds
    3 cloves garlic
    4 TB butter (or ghee)
1 lb lamb (cut into small cubes)
    2 1/2 c water
    salt to taste

It is very similar to East African pilau rice, however this dish
generally uses meat broth to add more flavor.

The following recipe is an adaptation of the vegetarian bariis found
    at the Somali Kitchen.

Wash the rice and soak it in water until ready for use. Fry the lamb
for a few minutes until browned. Remove from the pot until later.
Fry the onions until it caramelizes in the pot, about 2 minutes.
Grind the dry spices and add with the garlic. Cook for a minute
allowing the heat of the oil to release the aroma of the spices. Add
the diced tomatoes and cook until it breaks down into a sauce. Add
the lamb back into the pot. Drain the rice and add the measured out
water. Bring the rice up to a simmer then cover the pan with
aluminum foil. Ensure the pan is well sealed. Simmer for about 15
minutes or until all the liquid has been absorbed.
