From MICHAEL LOO@1:123/140 to RUTH HAFFLY on Friday, June 14, 2019 07:56:50
So my computer thinks I'm in Penn Yan, which oddly is
where I'm going on July 4. Somebody must have looked
up something on this system, and it stuck. Other than
my checking to see how long a walk it would be from
there to Konstantin Frank's winery (6 hrs) I've not
been focused on that part of the world.

I doubt I'd ever bother to classify or assess a
recipe in advance - if someone wants me to fix a dish
and it was an unfamiliar cuisine might have to look it
up and exercise some critical thinking, but by and
large, recipes are merely a guideline.
I usually try to stick close to the recipe for something new. Then too,
I usually don't do the really off the wall exotics, so I do allow for
wiggle room in my prep, if I I think it is needed.

Critical thinking always. So many recipes just don't
add up as published or publicized. I'd suggest that a
good dose of skepticism would do a wonder of insurance.

It had a device that you put the CD into (looked like a small
    player) ...
I've seen them, long in the past. Never
used one, not having had a car, though.
It was a gift to us, IIRC, from younger daughter. Sat. radio makes
keeping one station better now than when we'd have just AM or FM but
there are still times, especially on longer road trips, when a CD full
of favorite music beats the radio.

Lilli finally got rid of Sirius, which she'd been
paying a fair amount for. Silence is a wonderful
thing, though I'm concerned about her staying awake
    and paying attention while driving.

Sometimes I'm just a wee bit jealous of those who
get away with self-destructive behaviors for far
    longer than they ought.
Most often it doesn't bother me.
Then you're a better person than I. In my
psyche there is always the wish for just
retribution when someone seems to be getting
    away with something heinous.
I'd rather have justice than retribution.

Retribution is an emotional thing. Justice, I
figure it's an intellectual construct and not
more, though I believe it would be a good idea.

I think most consumers are on the same side as
    government in this case.
    Let's hope so.
Or let's hope that government is on the side of most
    consumers.
Not going to hold my breath on that one.

    Title: Grilled Tomatillo Shrimp
Looks like a coastal Mexican recipe, interesting.
I don't see any ingredients that smack of a regional
identity beyond a sort of generic Mexicanness, except
    mesquite and shrimp, of course.
This one is tasty enough but not so Mexican.
    Title: Layered Mexican Dip
This is more gringo than Mexican. (G)

Gringo too is mostly a gringo term.

    Title: Red Chili Sauce
    Categories: Mexican, Sauces
    Yield: 12 servings

16 ea Dried red chili pods 1 ea Hot Water
2 ea Cloves garlic 1 ea Salt to taste

Open each dried red chili pod. Wash well inside and out and remove
blemishes. Remove stems, seeds and veins from the pods. For hotter chili
leave some veins. Rinse with cold water and soak in hot water for one
    hour
or until soft. Place the pods in an electric blender (or food processor)
and add enough water to almost cover them, leaving about two inches
headspace. Blend until smooth and skins disappear, about 2-3 minutes. If
sauce seems to be too thick, add more water and blend for another 1
    minute
or until skins disappear. Add 2 cloves garlic and process until well
blended. Salt to taste. Source: unknown, possibly Mexican, but I've
had an identical sauce in an Indian restaurant

Not sure if you've really noticed, but Gail turns off our car radio just
before we pick you up somewhere -- so that you don't have to listen to
    our country western music.

On the one hand, this recipe does not look like the typical moussaka
recipes that I don't post to you -- on the theory that you could make
    them in your sleep.
On the other hand, I cannot make any sense of the directions and see
some obvious things wrong in the list of ingredients. Does it come
close to making sense to you? Is it like anything you have had or done?

Title: Slashed Eggplant - Karni Yarik
    Categories: Beef, Turkish, Vegetable
    Yield: 6 servings

    6 Eggplants, medium, long and
    1/2 c Oil
    2 tb Butter
    2 Onions, medium, diced
    1/2 lb Ground beef
    2 Tomatoes, 1 chopped, 1 cut i
1 Green pepper, seeded and cho
    2 tb Parsley, chopped
    Salt, to taste
    Pepper, to taste
    1/2 c Water

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F after the eggplants have been sauteed.
Cut the stems off eggplants. Then peel off a half inch wide strip of
the black skin lengthwise, leaving the next half inch with the skin
on. Repeat until you have a striped effect. Then slash them
lengthwise on one side only, starting and ending 1 inch from both
ends so that the eggplants can be stuffed. Saute eggplants very
lightly on both sides in oil. Place them in a single layer in a
baking dish or a shallow saucepan, slashed sides up. Add butter to
the same pan the eggplants were sauteed in and saute onions lightly.
Add meat, cook for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the chopped
tomato and green pepper; stir and remove from heat. Stuff slashed
eggplant with meat mixture. Place a slice of tomato on top of each
eggplant. Add 1/2 cup water, cover and cook over medium heat for 30
minutes or bake uncovered for 40 minutes. Serve with Tomato Pilav or
    egg noodles. Serves 6 persons.

You're very nice to him, no wonder he visits you more than me. Well that and the fact you live down there in civilization and I'm out here in the nether region.

Me, I just turn the CD player down. But my in-car music, CD's I've recorded, tends to be more along the line of loud screaming guitars. Helps me when I'm driving down those roads in Arizona...where I stare straight down the road until it fades out of sight over the horizon.
Here at the condo he's liable to end up listening to The Ragin' Cajun Doug Kershaw saw away on his fiddle, or some loser named Rimsky-Korsakov.

Crazy computer! (G) I worked at the Salvation Army camp outside of Penn
Yan one summer while a college student. Stopped by on the way south once
but it was between sessions and just about deserted.

my checking to see how long a walk it would be from
there to Konstantin Frank's winery (6 hrs) I've not

    Probably not worth it.

Steve likes talk radio to help keep him awake. He can always argue back
to the host (or a caller) to help stay awake. This most recent trip we
used a mix of talk radio, old time radio, Christian music radio and our
own music mix on the way south. Coming back, it was just the first and
last of that list, more of the latter than the former.

We checked out the seafood place last night with Rachel and decided
agaist reccomending it for the picnic. They billed the fried seafood as Calabash style which means it has a very light coating of flour on it. I ordered the regular (could have gotten jumbo for $2. more) shrimp and
scallops, sides of potato salad and cole slaw. Steve had oysters and
flounder with clam chowder and cole slaw; Rachel had clam strips with
    fried okra and french fries.

All of the breading was heavier than other places where we've had
Calabash style seafood--not as heavy as a lot of places do theirs but
still, much heavier than it should have been in our opinion. The cole
slaw was ok, chopped but not super fine like some places do. We like a
coarser cut. Steve's clam chowder was the New England style, made with
milk. Coastal NC has a unique style of chowder (similar to Manhatten but
no tomato) that would have gone well with the meal. My potato salad had
a pronounced mustard taste to it, should have been more subtle. Neither
my shrimp not scallops were as melt in your mouth tender (latter were
almost tough) as I have had elsewhere.

Rachel chowed down on the hush puppies when they came out so didn't
finish all of her fries and clams. We tried some clams; they seemed to
be on the tough side. Steve said his flounder was good but I don't
recall what he said about the oysters. On the plus side, servings were
    quite generous.

It's a very small place, only about a dozen tables. I asked (before we
got our meal), and they do take reservations but I think we'll look
elsewhere. I didn't check out to see if they served (or if you could
BYO) alcohol, forgot to as it's not our "thing". They serve pepsi
    products.

    Strike One!

our favorite Mexican place in town.

They billed the fried seafood as Calabash style which means it has a
very light coating of flour on it. I ordered the regular (could have gotten jumbo for $2. more) shrimp and scallops, sides of potato salad
and cole slaw. Steve had oysters and flounder with clam chowder and
cole slaw; Rachel had clam strips with fried okra and french fries.

    Nice cross-section of choices... :)

Basically so. Some are less than authentic to NC seafood than others
but, gotta go with what the people want. I like to check out the potato
salad and cole slaw in a new place; if they pass the test, the meat
    usually will also.

All of the breading was heavier than other places where we've had
Calabash style seafood--not as heavy as a lot of places do theirs but still, much heavier than it should have been in our opinion. The cole
slaw was ok, chopped but not super fine like some places do. We like a coarser cut. Steve's clam chowder was the New England style, made with milk. Coastal NC has a unique style of chowder (similar to Manhatten
but no tomato) that would have gone well with the meal. My potato salad had a pronounced mustard taste to it, should have been more subtle. Neither my shrimp not scallops were as melt in your mouth tender
(latter were almost tough) as I have had elsewhere.

    Sounds like overall a disappointment...

A bit of one. This place took over another seafood place we'd been to a
couple of times that was much better. A fire destroyed the old place's
2nd location and they probably couldn't recover financially after that.
    Sigh!

Rachel chowed down on the hush puppies when they came out so didn't
finish all of her fries and clams. We tried some clams; they seemed to
be on the tough side. Steve said his flounder was good but I don't
recall what he said about the oysters. On the plus side, servings were quite generous.

But generous servings of mediocre aren't that much of a plus... ;(

    Not in my book.

It's a very small place, only about a dozen tables. I asked (before we
got our meal), and they do take reservations but I think we'll look elsewhere. I didn't check out to see if they served (or if you could
BYO) alcohol, forgot to as it's not our "thing". They serve pepsi products.

Were I still drinking sodas, pepsi products would be another point against, but (at least for now) it's moot... :)

I know, I prefer Coke so got water. Had to ask for lemon and the slices
they brought out were probably cut from a small lemon. (G)

    Strike One!

So hopefully the bbq place will be more suitable... :)

Hopefully. We'll try to check it out in the next week or so and get back
    with a report.

We checked out the seafood place last night with Rachel
Ah, so Rachel made it to town.... with or without family...?

Without, and not that long a time with us. She got here Thursday
afternoon and was gone by late Friday morning. But, some time is
    better than none.

Apparently her plans got modified, too... Too bad she couldn't bring the kids... did she fly, then...?

and decided agaist reccomending it for the picnic.

Haven't checked it out but made reservations for a local cafeteria that
cooks all Southern style. Steve figured that if we did pork on Thursday,
that a bbq place on Friday would be too much pig. You can get eastern NC
style bbq at the cafeteria as an option tho.

Makes good sense... and they are of an age and health that
opportunities for visiting may be lessening...
Yes, she hadn't seen them in several years so it was good she
had the opportunity to do so.
    Indeed.

And, better then, than now with the hurricane steaming toward Florida.

Very true... Are they in a fairly safe position...?

Definately more expensive if she'd had the kids. We had offered
to take her in the camper but couldn't have done it, had she
brought the kids. Since her time was limited, she decided to fly
down to FL, stayed with her grandparents. She would have needed
a motel, had she brought the kids.
    True.
It was nice that she was able to get away by herself for a bit--
school has started again so she's up to her eyeballs in teaching.
Until the next school break... So I guess it adds more incentive to
you and Steve to go out west to see all the kids now... Too bad
Steve's parents weren't able to see them, though...

They don't have a computer any more, or a cell phone so can't get the pictures we get or the ability to Skype with the great grand kids.
When we were in FL in June, we shared the latest pictures we had.

And you can show them newer pictures next visit... better than
    nothing... :)

Good thing we've found the NC State Seafood Restaurant. (G) It's
not fancy or anything but it does have good calabash seafood.
So you do have a place to go when what you really want is
    seafood... :)

Yes, tho we've not gone in a while. Guess we need to make a trip. (G)
Last year after the final day of the sewing/quilting expo, Steve
wanted to take me there. We walked in and the noise level (it's just
one big, open area) was a bit much for me so we went elsewhere.

That could be an issue... along with the trip there... :)

Haven't checked it out but made reservations for a local
cafeteria that cooks all Southern style. Steve figured that if
we did pork on Thursday, that a bbq place on Friday would be
    too much pig.
    I suppose that's true... ;)
You can get eastern NC style bbq at the cafeteria as an option
    tho.

    Hi Nancy,

And, better then, than now with the hurricane steaming toward Florida.

Very true... Are they in a fairly safe position...?

Yes, they're about an hour north of Tampa, very inland so they just got
some wind and rain. Probably about what we're exected to get here
Thrusday night into Friday, be gone by late Friday afternoon. The storm
is supposed to skirt the coast so the area where we used to live is
    under evacuation orders.

It's not bad getting to if we're down in Raleigh anyway, a bit more
thought (leave earlier, etc) involved if we're coming from WF. I'd had 3
days of working the sewing/quilting expo at the convention center so
wanted something that was quieter. IIRC, we ended up at a Red Lobster.

    Hi Nancy,

Category 2 by then. I've not heard how much damage was done.
Emerald Isle, down near where we used to live, got hit with a
waterspout turned EF 2 tornado and the Outer Banks got wind/
    water damage, as usual.
I think I did hear something about that....

Now I'm keeping an eye on the systems in the Atlantic, both near us
and forming off the coast of Africa. So far, it looks like nothing is headed our way but we're still a week out from the picnic.

Still looks pretty good, and we're only days away now... :)

Overall, weather looks good--some possibility of rain each Sat, sun,
Mon, but not a whole lot. We've got plenty of shelters outside that we
can cook and still remain dry unless it decides to really dump a lot of
water. It'll be warm, but not humid.

We kept power on, but had we lost it, we could have moved into
the camper for cooking, lights, etc., just no air conditioning.
That would have worked out ok... :)

Especially since we keep it semi stocked anyway. We'd have just had to bring out some more food and clothes.

And it's but a few steps away... :)

Yes, but right now all the food stuffs are out of it. Figured I'd rotate
the stock over the winter, start out next spring with fresh stuff. If we
see the potential for needing it as shelter, it won't take long to
gather up some canned goods, stuff from the fridge, etc to restock.

IIRC, we ended up at a Red Lobster.
I guess that might have been a little quieter....
It was a good bit quieter. Helped me decompress; it was also my
birthday so we celebrated that. (G)
    Nice. :)

A small celebration; we were both tired from the work at the expo and
knew we had to pack to leave for VT in the next few days. We didn't
work the expo this year but had fun shopping it--and passing along to
one of the vendors how we improved their holder for the remote control.

Which I'm sure they appreciated finding out about...

They did--haven't gone to the web site (and I don't do f/book) to see if they've posted anything about it. We did get a small gift of
    appreciation.

heard, he was fairly sure that he'd be off on some work trip...

Very much so. We're due for more rain the next couple of days, with
temps getting down to near freezing. Rachel texted us this morning that

If it's something we need to take from here, it might go on a mental

We don't have the MRE's we had easy access to over there (could buy

take long to gather up some canned goods, stuff from the
    fridge, etc to restock.
    Yup.
That's why I keep some stuff like that on the shelves in the
pantry and fridge. Yogurt, cereal bars, tomato sauce/paste,
    pasta, drinks.......
A certain amount of emergency preparedness is always a good
    idea... :)
Had to do that when we were in Germany, just in case dependants
had to evacuate (if the USA got into a war time situation),
leaving the active duty member in Germany. Plus, any number of
places we've been in, we've had the risk of hurricanes so, it's
sort of second nature to keep stuff like that on hand.
    Makes sense.... :)

We don't have the MRE's we had easy access to over there (could buy equivalent at camping or Army/Navy stores if we really wanted to) but
have enough other stuff. Just have to remember to take a can opener
for the non pop top lids.

Yup.... That's something that you could just have in stock in the
    camper, too... :)

I suppose they might even change their design to incorporate
    your improvement... :)
Time will tell on that one but it's a possibility.
Just keep your eyes open when you are in the stores... ;)
It would be more of an on line or at expos thing; they don't sell
the big tables in stores other than their store in Florida.
Ok, then, keep your eyes open when online or at the expos... (G)
Or if you happen to be in their Florida store.... ;)

More likely to be expos as the FL store in in the pan handle area; we
stay in the main part of the state.

So not that likely you'd be anywhere near that store.... :)

    Hi Nancy,

Very much so. We're due for more rain the next couple of days, with
temps getting down to near freezing. Rachel texted us this morning
that she was expecting 1-3" of snow, with a low predicted of 10
tomorrow night. Good weather to stay in and curl up by the fire with a cuppa cocoa.

Indeed.... and the midwest and all are getting winter already, to be sure... Heard from a friend in Iowa that they had 3" of snow for Halloween... So far, we've only had idle threats... although there are more threats for later this week... haven't heard of any likelihood of accumulation yet, though... ;)

I saw on last night's news that the north east is due to get a heavy
hit. We're in the calm (warm) between cold fronts--may get down to 40s
    (for highs) next week.

plus another list of the ones that vary from trip to trip to
make sure we don't forget anything.
That's a very good idea... I know that I tend to need that sort
of reminders, even for fairly regular sorts of sorties... :)
We forgot a number of small, not really important for a short
trip stuff this last time out. Nothing of any consequence but
want to remember it for the next trip.
Yup... put it on the list.... ;)

If it's something we need to take from here, it might go on a mental
list. If it's not that important, we'll not worry about it or pick up
a replacement. Since we know we'll be doing some grocery shopping
during our next trip, we can, most likely replace anything we've
forgotten in the same shopping run.

Yup, that can be a consideration.... still a better idea to have it on
the list, even if you expect to pick it up along the way, so that it doesn't get forgotten... :)

I make lists from time to time--had a fair sized one yesterday for what
we needed to pick up at Sam's and elsewhere. Steve is cooking for the
VFW meeting this month (tomorrow)--baked pasta, garlic bread and salad,
with dessert. Today I chopped the onions & peppers, made the cheese mix.
We'll do the sauce and assembly tomorrow.

That's one thing that stays out there. We basically have a second
kitchen set up but for the foodstuffs out there. All we have to load is
    food and clothes.

there. We did it a few years ago, after Steve retired but before we
    moved up to WF.

We did end up with less than an inch accumulation on Friday, I think it
was, and then had lows overnight last night in the 20s... a little
warmed today, and the snow is pretty much gone now...We shall see how
    next week goes... ;)
