I haven't done anything with model railroads since I was maybe 10 or 11 years old, but I had some HO engines & cars and enjoyed setting them up a letting them run sometimes. I never got into setting up detailed train sets, but I always thought it was interesting to see other peoples' train sets.
I just got back into it in the last couple of months. I found my set from hi at I can do.

Arduino has revolutionized several hobbies. A former co-worker was big Lego c ollector, and had several Lego train sets, plus custom 3D printed track sections. If you never dealt with Lego trains, they are controlled via infrared remote control. I've read where the remote is replaced by an Ardiuin o is a central tower, and sends IR signals to the train. You could place motion sensors to trigger the train's behavior, such as stop at a station
after 3 laps, change tracks, or other ways to automate lights and
accessories.
