From Moondog@VERT/CAVEBBS to All on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 00:40:00
For those who are considered non-essential or cannot partake in normal communi ty events, what have you been doing to stay occupied?

One project I've been working on is making wall hung paper boxes to place
mail in after the junk mail has been sorted out. My brother rents from me,
so when the mail is brought to the house, it's been going in two piles on the kitchen table. The two inboxes will work better, since there's no chance something could be set on top of the mail, or a letter can be accidentally tossed out with other advertisement paper.

Another has been updating the lighting on my light duty hobby / workbench. i would like to put a bright LED bar on a swing arm to adjust where light is needed. There's an old magnifier lamp at my father's house in the basement, a nd it would be a perfect host to have the flourescent ring bulb replaced with LED strips.

I've got a slight rise in the middle of my range out on the south field. I'm thinking I'm going to try to take some earth out of that rise and move it to the berm that makes up the backstop. It's at about the 30 yard mark and causes me to have to put the target at 100 yards up a little higher than I like. I figure if I can take two or two and a half feed out of that rise I can lower my targets at 100 yards and not have to worry so much about shots going long.

Once that's done, I figure a few hundred rounds through the Garand and then a similar number through the M1 carbine just to get them sighted in. Then a couple of ARs that need to be sighted in and broken in, and then for fun my Mini14.

THEN I'll have some brass and a good excuse to spend some time reloading...

I was laid off recently, so I've been spending a good portion of my time looking for jobs & talking to recruiters via email & phone like I normally would during a job search. I've also been gaming on my PC a bit more than usual.. I've been into retro gaming lately, but I also recently bought Civilization 6 on sale from Steam for about $15 and have played that a bit. Civilization is one of those kinds of games you can play for hours at a time.

I also like working on programming projects (including BBS tools), which I've been doing from time to time.

Not a whole lot since I am working from home.

But that does let me work on low bandwidth projects.

    1. The new server. I picked up a Raspberry Pi rack from etsy and I am setting it up with 2.5" hard drives and a couple Raspberry Pis. So far, it seems to be working.

I can work on the Pis in between application builds.

    2. One of my non-computer hobbies is renovating old Tonka/Buddy L trucks. I have 2 plain ones that have been sitting around for a while and am going to finish them up to give to a co-worker who recently had a kid.

It only takes a few minutes to put on a coat of paint then I have to wait - and work.

Unfortunately, my workspace it taken up with my daily work. So playing with my new birthday present (a fancy desoldering tool) has to be put on hold.

And I had to put my TRS-80 Model 4P on the shelf to make room on the desk. So playing with that's on hold.

I'm getting a Tandy 1400LT today. We'll see about that.

Sounds good as well. I miss my grandparent's farm. My grandmother had 160 acres, 60 of it was wooded. Lot's of good deer and squirrel hunting, plus
some great spots for 400-500 yard shots into steep hillsides or thick fallen tree trunks.

The Tandy sounds like fun. I've been watching Adrian Blacks' Youtube channel and he has shown some cool Tandy videos.

Recently I picked up a Pi 4 and considered moving over several tasks I use an Athlon X2 5000 for. It's my previous main system and it's running Ubuntu and acts as a file share, document scanning station, and runs Guitarix well
enough with low latency. While I'll probably keep using the 5000 for heavier tasks, I could get by with using a Pi for document scanning and things I
wantto keep off my Win10 box.

Well, the local ham community is becoming quite active, so I've started working on getting the ham shack back up and running, and been taking part in regular "isolation nets" to keep in touch during this time of social distancing. Ham and electronic projects are getting to the top of the pile now. :)

Don't have quite that much land, just about 16 acres, boarding BLM land. Not much wooded land here in the prairie so we have to build berms and backstops. One of the positive aspects here is that my neighbors also shoot on their property so nobody can bitch much when I do. I miss the wooded land back in New York but you'll never get me to move back there with the current political situation in Albany.

The Tandy 1400LT is working well. I didn't have the right power supply, but I got close enough to fire it up for a bit.
The screen is good. The floppy drives both work.
I took it apart and inspected the insides. The backup battery is not leaking (but it's on the list to replace soon).
I gave it a good cleaning and the correct power supply should be here today. Hopefully, I can play with it this weekend.

I'm working on a Pi4 project too. I picked up a Raspberry Pi cluster rack from Etsy and I'm building a new server for the house. 4 2.5" hard drives. The Pi4 will be the file/media server. There's even enough room in the rack for a cold standby Pi4 and a sandbox Pi3 with its own hard drive.

I found that a Pi is able to power 1 2.5" hard drive (with SATA to USB adaptor) but not 2. For my server, I put a powered USB hub to run the hard drives.

My workbench project today was to install a 24" 1300 lumen light fixture.
The fixture was the type that attached to exisitng wiring, so I modified it to
take a standard pc power cable. I salvage a poer connector off an old power supply, then I had to Dremel a hole for it to fit, then hot glue it in.

I plugged it in (and it works) however it needs to be much higher than under the shelf above the bench. I'm drawing up a boom or gantry type mount so I
can adjust the fixture's height and angle. I'll use some scrap wood until I can get to a hardware store and build a proper base.

We have been swapping over to LED "daylight" bulbs, especially in the rooms we use more often and for hobby stuff - LOVE them!!!

I recently had to replace a couple lightbulbs in a ceiling fan unit in our house. I thought about buying a couple of Compact Fluorescent bulbs, but it seems those are hard to find now in favor of the LED bulbs. I've heard the LED bulbs are more energy-efficient, so I can see why compact fluorescent bulbs might be being phased out. The LED bulbs I bought are white/daylight bulbs, and they seem a little brighter than the old bulbs that were in the unit, but I like the white lite. It seems like a more pure light, with the older bulbs being more yellow. The LED bulbs say they're supposed to last 10 years, which is another bonus. I doubt we'll even be in this house for 10 more years, as we've been looking to get into a better house for us.

i just had to replace some weird cfl bulbs. i thought i had it cooled off enough but i got a wicked burn on my hand unscrewing one.
cfls have dangerous chemicals and they arent to be used where the light is turned on and off frequently.

i've been using led bulbs for a long time and i love them. i will tell you this, though: no way do they last for 10 years. maybe a few years. because of bad practices, they will probably have some issue and die within that 2 years. i've had this happen with expensive name brands and cheap dollar store ones.

i would still use led bulbs because i like to get bright white light and they are more energy efficient.

The CFLs also had mercury in them, making them difficult to dispose of.

The only problem I've had is with the dimmable LEDs. The older wall switches may not work well with them. But swapping out the switches wasn't very expensive.

We have been swapping over to LED "daylight" bulbs, especially in the
rooms we use more often and for hobby stuff - LOVE them!!!

Yes, CFLs and LEDs are great for that. I have one table lamp I like to leave on as a night light, it lights up a stairway and the upper floor, so if you get up for a drink of water, you can see your way to the kitchen.

It's nice having a 5w LED bulb there instead of a 100w incandescent bulb.

Maybe circumstances arise that preclude buying equipment.

Maybe some people just want the challenge of taking the test (with some notion of possibly getting on air at an open-ended time) and nothing more.

Many years ago I took a motorcycle driving course. Less than $200 (I
think). I had the chance to try at least 20 different bikes of all sizes.
I discovered which bike was the best fit for me. But, I never ended up buying a motorcycle of my own. I either borrowed other people's bikes, rented, or took out test drives at dealers to relive the experience. The license is for life. Now, in my almost feeble age I imagine that one day
I might still acquire a bike.

I have a family friend who is still a very active ham operator now in his 90's. VE3IWY. I *know* that he has been eager for me to get a license.
His collection of radio equipment is very interesting. We share many interests in computer stuff. I know that he would have taken to packet
radio just for the experience had he learned about it sooner.

Good to see you back online.

Maybe circumstances arise that preclude buying equipment.

Such as the price of gear. <G> Several years ago, there was a rig at the Hamvention...described as "DC To Daylight" for $20,000!! Now, I could outfit
a nice shack for $20,000...but for one rig, that's overkill.

That's why I operate "internet radio"...$1150 a month on disability does
    not go very far.

Maybe some people just want the challenge of taking the test (with some notion of possibly getting on air at an open-ended time) and nothing
    more.

Now, if they have job or family commitments, that's understandable.
